VVKDNKSDAY, AUCIIST (5, 1.02D T II E L U M B B R L OfiUE fa or ri.even mm BBSBMBI 5 m .i.0 Pickerings Acquire 5770 Acres of Timber in Modoc f County; Development Seen In cliftiusalng with Robs l-:in;ill, fliicf (inginefr of tha Prowool coiiiiKiny, Mcnamiuoe, Michigan, tho fjuostion bt. 'equipping band head rigH with variable speed motorH In order to he able to contral the speed of the saw, Mr. Uihgill said: "Our company e(piipped six .six-foot hand mills and two six-foot horizontal re-saws in the plant of Kurd Motor Co., at Iron .Mountain, Michigan, with vari ahle speed motors. These, motors being direct eounccted to the lower wheels of tin- machines. The speed range was approximately 50 per cent and was obtained by tho use of direct current motors. Some such arrangement is a necessity in eastern hardwood on account of the timber being frozen for about one-third of the year and ex haust speeds in the winter must be diminished accord ingly. The' Sugar Pine Lumber Co., of Fresno, Cal., in stalled variable speed motors on their band head-rigs and have found tin result very satisfactory. In Michigan and Wisconsin and Minnesota, where mired timber is sawn, the same results arc obtained by direct connecting lite motor to a jack shaft and belting this motor to the cutting unit. Two or more pulleys of different si.es arc plapio on this jack shaft so mounted that any of thcin can he put into use in a change-over period of fifteen or twenty minutes. In mills arranged in this fashion soft wood logs arc usually separated from Uie hard wood and sawn separately ami the speed set accordingly. The cUttlng result obtained are not equal to those ob lainahle by direct connection because the slight variation in speed CftUSed by belt slippage has some effect on the cutting qualities of the saw."
