HIGHWAY SHOPS MY BE LOST TO County Court Won't Lease Fair Grounda Tract to Department ASHLAND IS FAVORED Road Division Headquarters Would be Moved Acroaa Mountains Unless some satisfactory arrange ment can be made with tho county court tor the leasing on rcusonablu ) terms ot certain pic e ot the county fair ground property, which Is not being utilized, the division shops and the division head'iinrters ot the state highway department will be moved from Klamath Falbj to Ash land, It became known today. The county fair board favors thij lease. But the county court docs not, taking the position that Ibu county may want to use a cerfuln part of the land which tho stato de sires for Its own road shops. Approach Hoard State highway engineers ap proached the fair board this wock and set forth their plans for the construction of division shops In Klamath F'jlls which would serve the maintenance nnd construction needs of the entire division, includ ing Klauai'i Lake, Jackson and Josephine counties. The state de partment desired the pleee of land on the county fair grounds which is not being used, air would be used for anything in connection wtb the fair grounds In the future, tiie trtVth-'-'- V - I- . But when the .ounty court balked L. P. Campbell, assistant state high way engineer In charge of mainten ance, balked also and it became known today that he now favors the establishment of the division shop-, and the division headquarters In Ashland instead of Ktamath Falls. Whether or not C. C. Kelley, divi sion engineer ef tho state highway department, will recommend that the division headquarters be switch ed from Klamath Falls to Ashland, could not be learned today. Mr. Kelley refused to comment on the matter In any detail. But it ti known that Mr. Kelley favors Kl'am ath Falls and that if it were pos sible to keep the division headquar ters here he would do so. Klamath Falls is centrally located In tho division, and the transportation of maintenance equipment would be easier uceoniplished from this point than from Ashland or any other city In the division. Mr. Kelley admitted that th? present quarters occupied by thl state highway department shops, were Insufficient and that the plans of the department were to construct permanent and extensive shops. The position of the state .highway department is that It a site can be secured in Klamath Falls fur the' shops at a reasonable figure, the division headquarters remain hero, if not, then they, are transferred e Ajhliuid.
