BE ASKED FOB BY-LUMDEHMEN Clement and Kennedy Prob ably Will not Start on Trout Creek This Year According to cx-Suporlntcndcnt Fred A. Dnker, Clement und Ken nedy, lurgo fir operators of Fort son, Washington, and Hticcessful bid ders on the Trout Creek unit, will probably ask for an extension of time on tholr contract with the gov ernment, which, us It stands, calls for tho company to commence log ging operations this season. Tho Trout Creek unit contains ap proximately two . hundred million feet of timber, und was purchased by Clement and Kennedy at the same time thul the Khaw-Hertram Lumber company purchased the Squaw Flat unit. Tlioro has been considerable speculation among Klamath lumber men ax to whether Clement and Kennedy would sturt operations hero this year or not. but it appears that they will not, although Baker stated that no definite application for an extension hud been made. GQRE24TQ3 Pen Pushers Are Too Crook ed for Men From Open Spaces Tho l.ttniberloguo ball team de feated the Sprat; no Ulver Giants by a score of 21. to 3 at tho game played at the Langell Valley irri- gntlon bnrhccuo Sunday. The chief cuuso of this one-sided score was foul play on the part of tho Lumberlogne, which had so far lost every gamo of tho Bcason, with tho exception of one game won for it by Jack Anthony, press room foreman, who officiated as umpire at tho only victory of tho season previous to Sunday. In order to make a good game, therefore, Ltimbcrlogue picked up four likely ringers and used them in tho gume. They proved too much for tho Sprngue team, howovcr, nnd the result was a very one . sided game. An interesting feature of the gamo was tho system of yodels in vented by tho outfielders of both teams In order to keep in touch with each other in tho timbered area beyond tho alleged diamond. TIjo brick work on tho ton-cell dry kiln has also becu finished, ' C Making ;Water Run Upstream Was a Snap for Paul Bunyan WllPfl It is no picnic to tackle tho wild erness and turn tho very forest It self In to a commercial commodity delivered at the market. A logger needs plenty of brains and back, bone.- Paul had his setbacks the same as every logger only his were worse. Being a pioneer he had to invent all bis stuff as he went along. Many a time . his plans were upset by the l mistakes of some incompetent fore man. The winter of the Blue snow. Shot Cunderson had charge in the Big Tadpole river country. He landed all of his logs In a lake and in the spring when ready to drive be boomed tho logs three times around the lake before ho discover ed there was no outlet to it. High hills surrounded the lake and the driveable streams were ten miles away. . Apparently the logs were a total loss. Then Paul came on the job him self and got busy. Calling in Sour dough Sam, the cook who made everything but coffee out of spur dough, ho ordered him to mix enough dough to fill the big water tank. Hitching Babe to tho tank ho hauled it over and dumped it into New Features to Be Added to Lumberlogue Next Wednesday Let other newspapers, liavrf their health columns, their bedtime stor ies, their Cynthia Grey columns and other bunk to kid their readers, but Lumberloguo has contracted for. a feature column that will knock all these imitations for a row of pine sheds. . Miss Jelllcose Juniper Joynes has hod more lovo affairs than Emil Larson's had drinks, has been aded to the Lumberlogue staff, and start ing next Wednesday will conduct a column of advice to lovelorn lumber jacks. . This column has become an ab solute necessity, nnd will no doubt prove to be one of tho most popular features of Lumberlogue . Ray Hofberger, assistant man ager of the Modoe Pino compuny, was in town over tho week-end on business nnd pleasure. , HACK TO CAMP P.rtuly Montgomery has rotnrnod to Calamus camp after upending several days in town, the Lake. When It "rlz," as Sam said, a mighty lava-llko stream poured lorth and carried the logs over the hills to the river. There ix a landlocked lako in Northern Minnesota that Is called "Sourdough Lake" to this day. Chris Crossliaul was a careless cuss. He took a big drive down the Mississippi for Paul and when the logs were delivered In the New Orleans boom it wax found that he had driven the wrong logs. The owners loked at the barkmarks and refused to accept them. It was up to Paul to drive them back upstream. No one but Paul would ever tackle a job like that. To drive logs upstream is impossible, but if you think a little thing like an Im possibility could stop him, you don't know Paul Bunyan. He simply fed Babe a good big salt ration and drove him to the upper Mississippi to drink. Babo drank the river dry and sucked all the water upstream. The logs came up river faster than they went down. MV V OUR U6S -Cuts and text by courtesy Red river Lumber Co.. Juniper Jones and her answer was short and snappy. "Tell him to take lessons from the camp blacksmith," she said. This settled it with us. So Miss Joynes will undertake to give sim ilar illuminating answers to any jacks may wish to ask hoc The editor of Lumberlogue at' times is worried as to what may be the proper thing. It was just last night we asked Miss Joyne3 just how far a fellow could go wfth a girl he'd seen for the first time. "It all depends on how far she has to walk home," she replied sweetly. We think you'll agree she's well qualified to conduct this column. So if any of you lumberjacks or mill hounds havo any love affairs that are bothering you, just send t your questions to Miss Jelllcose Juniper Joynes, lovelorn editor of The Lumberlogue.
