forces battling for possession of
Canton continued today with re
newed intensity and considerable
casualty. River steamers are'
crowded with refugees and unable
to move on account of cross tiring
over the Chukiang river.
The commander of the largest
Chinese gunboat left bis ship after
receiving $100,00(1 from the chief
of the Yunnanijfio forces. The
Yunnnnese are confident of win
ning. A Chinese chamber of com
merce accompanied by a delega
tion of American, called on the
army chiefs today and requested
that further fighttng be carried on
10 miles outsido the city. Tho
trouble will last for some time, ac
cording to Indications. Additional

from the Polk county Jail was frus-
rated about 3 o'clock this mornhig
when City Marshal Chase surprised
Earl Cullen, after be had battered a
hole thrjug'h the brick ' wall and
was about to crawl out. Cullen had
hidden under a cot downstairs when
the other prisoners were locked in
their cells by Marshal Chase. As
soon as the Marshal left on nil
rounds, Cullen emerged from biding
and began on the back wall of the
Jail. As bis work seared comple
tion, he made noise enough to at
tract Chase's attention a block or
two away.
Cullen Is held for the grand
Jury on a forgery charge. He serv
ed one time In the penitentiary from
Lane county.

of an explosion in the West Ken
tucky Mining company here yester
