The insect may bo exter minated by fail and winter plowing and early planting of corn crop. Keeping the crop froe from weeds and grass during tho growing sea son not only Increased the yield but also destroys the hiding places of the moths. Wilt of watermelons in Oregon is caused by a fungus that attacks tho roots, say tho experiment sta tion authorities. Tho fungus lives In tho soil from year to year and spreads rapidly by water drainage, on feet ot livestock, -or in stable manure. To combat this fungus growth, watortuclons are planted in new ground each year. The period that elapses before the land enn be considered freo from infection is set at 10 or 12 years. Some varie ties ot melons are resistant to the wilt. '' Tho most serious Insect enemies of cereal crops, such as the Hessian fly, chinch bug, tho white' gruh, will not bo controlled in Oregon until some successful community action can be socurod, any experi ment station authorities. Full plowing is, , tl6( k most universally beneficial piRftlcd' for control of the inaoct pests. Planting corn on fresh ly broken sod Is almost certain to exposo the crop to tho ravage of tho cutworms, wlreworms, nnd whlto grubs.
