Tbere l a chance, for experiments with peas I nnch year, as we almost invariably find a few new varieties coming in- ;to commerce duo to the indefatig able labors of English pea breeders, who. In recent years, have made son than many other varieties, whirh is one of. its strong points. The quality is excellent. Noll's Excel sior and American Wonder are ear ly types that find favor in muny gardens, the former being largely used as an extra early pea. "Top o' the Morn" and Loxtonian are types of the English giant pod- I,ct the Lawn Mulch Itself t .great strides in this succulent vege- j ded peas of rare quality and free table, one of their chief aecompish , . ments boing the development of giant pods for dwarf vinos whore . formerly the giant podded typo was v limited exclusively to the tall or I bush pea class. ' This Is a good pea season because tot its earlineas and early peas will hn nAriinr than usual in the cardens of those bold growers who always chance putting in peas as soon' as J the soil can be worked. Dwarf peas , are growing in popularity and are I the standard for the home gardener I as they obviate, the necessity of get ting brush or wire to hold the vines. Little Marvel is one of the popu- lar sorts, almost always a fine crop- I per and bearing over a larger sea- bearing. "Eight Weeks" is anoth er newcomer highly n-coniniended, dwarfer in growth than the two pre ceding. Loxton, the English pea wizard .has given a cross between the hardy early round seeded peas and the better quality, but more tender, wrinkled peas inTuporb that can be planted almost as early as the round seeded types and is much superior in quality. 4 Gracilis is a standard of excellence and one of the finest flavored of the sturdier growing semi-dwarf sorts. Thomas Laxton is a selected type of Gradus of stronger growth, reaching from 3 to 3 feet in height. Tele phone and Champion of Eifglnnd are standard bush peas. They insist that Americans don't do half a Job of spading and don't turn the soil much more than six inches deep. This is probably true', because we are accustomed to thrust the spade into the soil along the line of least resistance, which is in a slanting di rection. We get easier leverage 'with the foot and quicker penetra tion, but sacrifice depth in doing so. - The correct manner is to drive the blade of the spade Into, the soil in an almost wBefpeadicuJar position and then tonl' over the sorh Thls-ls much harder work than the ordinary method, but it secures much better depth. Although slower, it is well worth the extra time and labor in results, ' for it. adds ' two or three inches to the' cultivation of the soil as compared with the ordinary slant vise method. Having turned over the spade of soil, pulverize it with the edge of the spade, shattering the larger and carder lumps with the flat of the blade. ' By taking the task slowly, thrusting the spade in as perpendicu larly as muscle permits and pulveriz ing finely as you go along, the gar den will be in much better trim, the' plants will make much faster growth and commercial fertilizer raked into , the soil will penetrate readily to greater depth and come into contact with a greater root spread than In ground spaded in the usual shallow manner. ... ' I ' ' Adopted from the Robert W. Ser vice novel, "The Roughneck," the picture moves with the vigorous rhythm of the Service verse; often, in fact, one Is carried away by the colorful treatment. To those who have enjoyed the virile, he-man writings of Mr. Ser vice, "The Roughneck" is certain to bring deligbt. The story is re plete with exotic adventures enough to satisfy the greediest consumer ot romance. "The Roughneck" Is being hailed as one of the most popular releases of the season. The character portrayed by John Moon by George O'Brien is a sup erb piece of acting and his phy sical prowess and pleasing person ality add much to the interpreta tion.
