Mrs. M. C. Paton of Tillamook Gets 15-Year Sentence on Manslaughter Indictment Whipped Child So Hard It Died Shortly After TILLAMOOK, Ore., May 4. Mm. M. C. Paton today pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter in connection with the death of her grandchild, Silvia Louise Descamps, aged 4, who died from the effects of a beating. She was immediately sentenced to an indeterminate term in the state penitentiary not to exceed 15 years. She was ar raigned on a' charge of second degree murder and pleaded not guilty to that charge. District Attorney Claude Barrick told the court that a plea of guilty to a charge of manslaughter would be ac ceptable', provided the maximum penalty would be pro nounced. The child died April 21 last. She was the daughter of Mrs. Cora M. Dcscampa of Portland, who, following a divorce, sent her four children to reside with their grand mother. F FIRST VIGTIM Miss Martha Merrill Dies After Illness of Several Days Martha Margaret Merrill, aged 11, first victim of scarlet tover in Klamath county this year, died at Merrill this morning at'12:20 a . m. following an illness of several days. She was the only child of Mr. end Mrs. Kay Merrill, members ot tho original Merrill family that founded tho southern Klamath town. Miss Merrill was a native ot Klamath, having been born at Mer rill. She was a student of the Mer rill high school ottalrs. Tho Mor rill family Is quite prominent In affairs ot southern Klamath and well known In this city. S. New som, county health officer, charging D. M. McLemore, prominent California livestock operator, with creating a health menace on the west side of Klamath lake by re fusing to remove and either burn or bury 100 carcasses of his cattle which now lie in the waters of Odessa creek. Mr. McLemore will probably be arrested as soon as he arrives in Klamath, it was learned. If any of. his cattlo are driven into the county, the property will be attached and cost of removing the cattle will proceed, the coat to be taken from county sale of cattle.
