Hut If a hotbed ennim be Installed .in old frame can nnd while it can not be stained as early as a hotbed it-can easily save a month and a half and give that much extra grow-. Ing time for early seed crops. . Cold frames might as well' do heme-made. While the - standard sash is made for frames of 6 to 3 ft. units, smaller frames are eas ier to handle for the small garden and they can be home-made or the nearest carpenter can easily throw them together with screws, so that they can. be knocked down and stor ed -when out ot use. Small frames about 24 ft. by 3 ft. from any loose lumber are a most convenient alio. A carpenter can put those together with very little effort and while he Is about It have htm make a frame or sash U tit attached to the back ot die frame by hinges- You can glaze this yourself with little trou ble. ' These frames caa be a foot high at .the back and six Inches In front. An ideal place lor them Is against the south wall ot a house, barn or garage or against a fence where the frames will be protected from north winds. With hinged tops or sash hooks and eyes can be placed In the sash cover and fence to which the tops can be hooked when It IS desirable to open the frames for veatllatica.. .. to water, them, or to pull weeds. . The standard 6 by 3 foat frames are often a nuisance to handle when it bomes to weeding and watering, as it Is a tough job to stretch over Into them to. reach weeds at. the back and the sash will always be in the way on one side or the other, whichever way they are slid off. ; . :. . Cheap and practical substitutes for glass are now sold which make' glazing a frame merely a matter of the use of a hammer and tacks. This is celluloid, transparent, light, and there is a great saving In breakage. . . THK VALE OP GLASS Glass is essential in gardening even if it is no , more than a few individual panes. It Is needed to place over seed boxes in the house. It, of course, is needed Jn windows which . give light and sun to the growing . plants. . It is ' especially valuable as a top to boxes known In the garden as cold frames and hotbeds. . .. - The wizardry of a little glass In the. growing of seeds is a garden marvel. The reason that glass is so essential is that while it Is trans parent and admits sunlight; it is a poor conductor of heat and equal- I izes temperature, tempering .the . swjh emits xrom- moaerate 40 ireez- lng. which are so common in winter and spring over a large portion of the country.-. . .- . . Added to this feature, 1: retards the evaporation of moisture, hold ing it in suspension and giving the tiny plants the moist atmosphere they need and in which they luxur iate. It also protects from drying winds in the warm days of spring when tender seedlings are often shriveled and It alio protects from cutting Icy blasts that often de scend upon us and . permits the young plants to enjoy uninterrupt ed - growth until they are large enough and strong enough. to go into the open ground and hold their own with the elements. ; V, Another valuable protection of glass is that it minimizes the loss of seedling plants from sudden delug es ol rain which wash them out of the ground and early spring waste great qualities of seeds and seed lings, A - little glass Is a necessary adjunct of a start In gardening en terprise and one of the things to provide early In the spring when the Beed order 1s sent in, if it consists only of locating; and gash ing few old window panes. . Discorded, .cellar, windows or old sash of ally kind can be glazed and repaired and made of great value in the garden '" GUW.-iops -cna be placed.
