A hundred or more men, frantical ly, but hopelessly' pushed their nray through the underground recesses of Mine 41, of the Bethlehem' Mines Corporation, three miles west of here today. In an effort to find 34 'miners who were . entombed last night when am explosion wrecked the shaft. . .' Not since a shoet of flame burst up through the opening that extends 300 feet below the ground has any one -on the surface heard from the imprisoned men. A low rumbling preceded the explosion which wreck ed the mine's lifting equipment and fans, caused the tipple to totter and fall Into the shaft and which shook 'buildings in Fairmont, broke win dows and shook doors from their binges on houses 300 feet away. S'nce that moment crowds of fran tic women and children have milled' about the mine trying to find some word of the entombed 'men. Only two rescue workers had been able to send word to the surface and that word hvns not encouraging. R, M. Lamblo. chief mine Inspector-of West Virginia, and a companion were the first to go down. They pushed their way past the debris to the stable where the mine horses wero kept.; All the 36 animals were dead. ; Then they pushed on into one of the heudlngs. The air was bad, thoy said. That was all. They could find im truce of the men and when they came to tho surface ex perts from every mine In. the district organized themselves into groups, rendy to explore every heading to its furthest reaches. . While not definitely determined, gas was helteved to have caused the explosion, nnd lute lust night' Mine Superintendent B e n t o i' Mitchell, said he did not believe any of the men could be alive. , Soon after, the explosion occurred there wero reports that dynamite bombs had been dropped Into the shaft but these were Inter dented. The mine opened on a non-union basis last October - and Employs about 250 men; " . t Lamble reported that the mine was badly damaged Inside and that DEAD 1 .'' purchase of one tube of regular prjce--50 prepared fish food at 44 - 44 - f4 - 44 rescue' worketa,' would find it hard going through the shattered passage ways.. - .-. . . ; - Some hfpe was held out tor the men because of the quick work by mechanics In repairing one ot the mine fans. This apparatus was not seriously damaged and iwithln a few hours after the blast It was operat ing and forcing air down to the Im prisoned men. Electric lights also were sooa working in the mine. At 9 : 4 1 o'ctock rescue workers had penetrated one bile into the workings and no bodies had been located. The work is reported prog ressing favorably. Personals Mr. and .Mrs. F.B.
