'Chains aro unt noedod, ,ise0yt "-'of Date- BE SURE TO READ THIS SFJtlF.S How to Talk By rIIOOSON WHMSON CewlU Etor Hew Uiireraitlel DIctiMary Article No. 5 One of the most common errors in our larnjuanc is the mispronun ciation 61 the word "height." Listen irt' on almost any convcrsa-' tion where that word is iwed that is, where any degree of education, high or low, is represented and about nine times out of ten you hear "height" mispronounced. How does it happen ? I don't know. I've been watching it for years, and I've given up. The one and only correct way to pronounce the word "height" is "hitc"! but invariably it is mispro nounced with' a "th" at the end, the same as "width." The word in itself is simple enough, and there is no excuse for trying to make another word of it. Nobody ever mispronounces such words as. "light," "flight." "right," and "might." All of these words end in "ht," as do many similar words-..'. 1 never have heard any body .iy "lighth," "flighth," or "righth," but most of them do say "hcighth.". . It It well to watch the "th" in; each words as "length," "breadth," and others coding in "th." Many are likely to alight the full pronunciation of the "th," some aaying "lengt," "dept," etc, sod yet those same people will give iireu to "th" st the end of "height," where it doesn't belong. ' Don't be thy In correcting loch mit taket .when ; you hear your friends make them. Of course you'll be care ful no! to ofTtnd. Said the Publishers : "When our editorial staff : first realized that the rapid advance of science was bringing to us an avalanche of new words, orders were at once given to compile an entirely new dictionary. When this task was completed, our former printing plates were abandoned. And so all other out of date printing plates should be thrown into the discard. But unfortunately for the public, many of them are merely revised and placed on the market as itsw dictionaries. HERE IS OFFERED TO ALL READERS OF - The Evening Herald the entirely new dictionary: newly compiisd vocabulary, enlarged mod ern, accurate, authoritative; clear new type, self pronouncing; flexible textile leather seal grained binding soft and pliable, making it easier to handle; stamped in gold, red edges; durable and complete in every detail of new book making methods. It is that of a successful newspaper editor, who, through overwork, finally comes lo believe there Is another Wrltord always driving him to accomplish Just one moro task. H Is fo escape this "other self", which creates tho op posing forces in tho first portion ot tho sUry that Induces Wirlford to seek safety In flight. During tho polt-im'posed exllo, Wrlford meets a tramp calling himself Puddlebox, who Is a philosopher, totally against all forms of labor and deathly afraid ot tho sea. Puddlebox Is played by Otis Harlan. , , The second part of the story soes the elimlnatloni ot Wrlferd'a other self through the philosophy nnj lasi-1 ness ot Puddlebox, but then, the sea becomes the 'menace, It proves more relentless, more fiendish, thnn any human agency, developing into tho most Incarnato sort of villain. It destroys Puddlebox, ; but not until after be had practically recreated WriforJ, who has developed or de generated Into another tramp. Then t-ndulgence-lova of self beccmes tho ever present .enemy ot Wrlford,. a condition which makes "The Clean Heart," or "'The Cruel ties of Life," a truly abnormal mo tion 'plcturo story. The unselfish ness of a genuine love finally gains mastery over all, which practically makes a drama with only one player except the numerous people he meets In his wanderings a'mong strangers. - : ' " AT THE LIBERTY Common Sense Will tell you -The more and smaller the voids in hollow tile walls The More Insulation YOU GET IN YOUR DRY KILNS .
