The old-fashioned cockscomb or celosln in brilliant new attire has conutnto Its own atter many years of modest retirement, especially since wintr-r bouquets havo lecomB popular. . There are two types, the cristnta or crested section, from which the plant takes its common name, the flower head resembling a-rooster's comb, and the plumosa or feathery type, bearing brilliant plumes rival ling. -the oxt rich plume in texture. Recently intermediate types have been developing which combine the characteristics of liolh . types, the plumes sometimes bearing a comb. :T0 APPLY SAGE TEA Look Young! FRIDAY NIGHT'S DANC E At Merrill Postponed Until Friday ( MAY 2 There aro dwarf and tall fnrmti of the crested type, but the Iiuro heads of tho giant tall type have outstripped the popularity of the dwarfs whose hugo combs almost ob scure the short stem. The Wool flower, a special type, has blooms resembling balls of cbenille in vary ing colors. A further development has given tho chrysanthemum flow ered and a cross between the plumy, and crested typos has given the par rot's feather strain. These annuals need little atten tion save a sunny position to thrive and make brilliant and lasting dis play. They range from yellow through pinks and roses to dark crimson. Cut and dried when they first develop they mako brilliant winter decorations. The tall varie ties make stately groups in the annual border or among perenials as fillers on In groups among shrubs. The dwarf types make brilliant bedding plants and are much em ployed in formal gardens. They may be sown in tho open ground as soon as danger from frost is over. They are fine for specimen plants in pots to decorate verandas, the lasting quality ot the plumes or crests mak ing a fine display for weeks. They should be given plenty of room to develop. The tall kinds j need about eighteen inches of space each iwny to show their full beauty, as every side branch bears Its plume or crest. A beautiful feature ot these plants is that the stems show the same color as the flowers so that the color of the plant may be told from the seedlings as soon as they are large enolgh to be transplanted.
