No. S, Amor- I Iran Lex Ion. that with the establishment of as ef fective beetle control as has been established for forest fire coutrol, losses duo to tho beetle can be Je- dticrd to a minimum." Bill ror Appropriation , is Introduced in Congress ' By John E. Raker WASHINGTON, l)e. 20. Jtapre- aontaUve John E. Raker of Califor nia, has Introduced' bill to ap- propirate $60,000 to fight timber , Insect In the national forests of Oregon and California and 194,000 additional tor the lands ot the Ore gon and California grant, Indian reservations aud unreserved public lands In the two states. It la provided that the appropria tions ahall not be used unless the two states or the private owners of adjacent or intermingled lands shall satisfy the secretary of agriculture that idtect Infestation will be abated in aecordsnc with tha state law or voluntarily to the extent necessary to protect timber ., owned by the Vnitedf8tates. . Dr. L. O. Howard, chief of the bu reau of entomology of the department of agriculture, in a report Just Is sued, describes the fight on tab bark beetle jn tho forests of Oregon; and California ta the ' largesji control projee ertr attempted. The art Is a little larger than the state of Delaware and In fen years the beetle has killed over a billion feet ot mer chantable yellow pine, yalued at more than S, 600.000. ' "Thk is SO times as much as has been killed by tire on the una area during-, the same per(,od,' sa j jDf, Howard. "It has been demonstrated (Congress is holding the trump card on a very Important question in Klamath and Lake counties. The question is whether or not tho work against the pine beetle tnfestions In the pine forests will be continued In 1924. ln 192J. congress appropriated $150,000 for this work. But 50. 000 ot the original appropriation was used in 1922, arid Congress ex tended or rcapprbpriated the balance, $100,000, for work in 19SS. - The pine beetle control work here during 1923 has taken another $50, 000 from the original appropriation, leaving $50,000 for federal aid in this work for the year 192J. Whether or aot this money can be used during the ensuing year de- j pends entirely upon the. attitude of : congress who will either extend the balance ot the original approprlaton, or will refuse the plea tor extension. It the latter course is taken, the ( tight against the pine beetle which , has been carried on so successfully during the past two rears, will anto- ' matlcally cease. Colonel W. - B. Oreely, head of the United States Forest Service, will be the medium through which tha pins beetle work ers will express their desires. His efforts last yaar ware successful sad i it ia expected that he will meet I With as good success tnia year. : IBut one control camp will be op- i crated during the winter.
