The vigilantes, armed, with army
pistols and rifles Or sawed-off shot
guns and the' authority of deputy
sheriffs, are, for the most part, ex

the 1,000 towns In the state which

operation in the other 200 towns
before the year is ended.

cade erected at intersecting roads,

due for a rain of lead, should they
pass !. that way. Another county

each other. " The same county has
provided spiked belts, which are
stretched ..across the' highways to
puncture the tires of the automo
biles - ot the fleeing bandits. In
counties where there are airplanes,
arrangements have been completed
for' their use in case of emergency.

The story of a strange honor code
Is being told here, following the re
capture of Alike Donnelly, several
years, ago a red-shirt man at the
state penitentiary, Donnelly was
taken , recently, h; an Idaho posse
which , scoured tho hills for weeks
following his alleged fatal shooting
of W. A. Crisp, pool hall proprietor
ot Hope, Idaho.
'i : Donelly was sent up tor life In
1911, according to Detective Chester
Edwards -who tells the story, and
some years after that,' with two
thrilling escapes to hlB credit, the
negro prisoner was wearing a red
'.shirt to signify that he was a bad
"prloner,. Warden Henry Drum sum
moned him to the office.
'Mike," he said, "I've decided to
make a trusty out of you. I'm going
to' put you on the outside gate.
" You'll" Tiave every chance In the
world' to escape from there If you
wish to betray my confidence."
Donnelly hesitated not a second,
according to Detective Edwards.
"Warden, don't ' tempt mo," he
answered, according to Detective
Edwards.' "I'm going to escape
from this prison the first chance I
get but I don't want to go that way.'
