In a formal slatemeat be said: "There has been so much tataua -ripr&Uadlog amavar th.ucopk,'Sno the real meaning ot the position of tho united mine workers of America with regard to tho proposed six-hour day and five-day week that I believe something should bo said that would set tho public right on tho subject. It has been charged by coal operators that tho miners are demanding more pay for less work. Tho principle of tho shorter work day does not mean anything of the kind. They do not ask for tho six hour day as tho max imum, but they do ask that they be given reasonable nssuranco that they will havo reasonably steady employ ment six hours a day throughout the year. "Many years ago miners were com pelled to work ten, twelve or more hours a day, and when they made tholr tight for a shortening of the work day to eight hours they were met with the samo kind ot fight they aro now facing In their request for a six hour day. Dut they won, and the country has had all the coal It could use ever since. "Tho six-hour day Is not a scare crow, nor Is It a menacp to the coun try, as some employers would have ua believe.
