PEICINO, Nov. 6. (By Mall)
Hundreds of Southern or Siechuan
eso, prisoners havo been decapitat
ed by the Northern defenders of
Ichang, according to reports brought
to Peking by foreigners who have
been visiting the Ichang front. The
troops who are doing the decapitat
ing are not the soldiers ot Wu Pel
fu, but the original garrison ot
Ichang whlrh has looted tho city
three tlmea during the last four
months. The bodies ot tholr victims
are invariably stripped ot their cloth
ing and then thrown Into tho Yang
tze together with their heads.
These atrocities were brought to
General Wu Pel-fu'a attention on his
arrival at Ichang owing to tho fact
that- some ot the original garrison
one day mistook a Chinese collector
for tho Standard pil company for a
Southern soldier nnd cut off his head
in the usual manner. Thoy did not
find out their mlstako until thoy
wont through tholr victims clothing
In search ot loot and found Instead
documents proving his identity.
In ordor to smooth matters over
they at once fished the head and the
body ot the deceased out of .the rlvor,
sewed them together -again and
boaghUho best coffin that they could
afford. Corpso and coffin were then
carried to the home ot the deceased,
whore profuse apologies were offer
ed to his family for the Incident.
The Standard Oil company, how
ever. Is not satisfied with these apolo
gies and has demandod that a sola
tium be paid. tho wife and chltdron
of tho murdered man.

A Sales Campaign
When the businessmansaysthe market is dull he refers to
the market where he fchas' Ween 'accustomed to sell his products.
Business will remain, dull for suchla'.man if he does not find
means'-to extend hid territory '' '
Keen businfesa1 nUn1 are always on the alert to find a market
beyond their usual territory! Some enterprising stockmen from
Massachusetts exhibited at the recent Livestock Show in Port
land and thus enlarged their trade area.
. ; There is always a market if you can find it Many wide
awake firms are securing orders from points hundreds of miles
beyond their usual territory by use of the Long Distance tele
phone. Such orders .are 'secured at small expense' and without
undue delay. Pacific Long Distance lines reach all Pqcific
Coast; points with connections to all points east.
