Preliminary arrangements for an Ecumenical con ference, the first since the Reforma tion to represent "Christians ot every faith and land," have been approved by the administrative committee of the federal council of the Churches , ot Christ in America, it as announced here today by the Rev. Charles S. Macfarland, general secretary. One ot its objects Is to make future wars Impossible. Dr. Macfarland said that in order to have the assemblage the most widely representative gathering of modern times, one that would em brace every Christian denomination, all '"questions for discussion are to be limited." He declared that the conference would be "less doctrinal and' theological Jn its purpose that .the'i'world conference on faith and order which is being promoted by the leaders of the Episcopal church looking toward the reunion of all Christendom." The projectors, he said, are desir ous that the 'Conference shall be held only when the churches of all the nations are ready for It. Already, he said, church federations of the Scandinavian coun tries, ot Switzerland and America, are backing the movement whtch Is expected to take definite shape after the meeting ot an International com' mittee to be held In Geneva, Switzer land, next August. While the ques tions to be discussed at the forth coming gathering will not partake of the profound theology that absorbed the attention of the earlier councils, yet, in practical accomplishment for human welfare it should surpass them all." The idoa, advanced by the foreign commerce service of tho Southorn railway and Mobile & Ohio railroads, has been presented to the Midwest Oulf-South Atlantic Foreign Trado and Transportation committee, repro seating commercial organizations of the principal middle west and south ern states, which has beeri asked to lend Its weight to fruition of tho plan. Answers to letters sent to moro than a score of cities In the organlza tlon enthusiastically endorse tho plan, according to H. O. McLean, of Louisville, assistant foreign freight traffic manager of the two railroads. Mr. McLean says the plan is sim ilar to that proposed by the British government which proposes a gi gantic touring 'exhibition for British Industry- The Brliish plan, as de scribed in a recent American consular report, would be initiated with an itinerary comprising South Africa, Australia, 'New Zealand, and Canada "The duration ot the tour," tho ro port says, "will be about 18 months and should the venture be attended with that degree ot success which is anticipated for it, similar projects to other parts of the world will receive consideration. It is Intended that somo BOO British firms shall be in vited to take part in 'the tour. The scheme has been sanctioned by the government board of trade and tho venture will be planned and carried out by the department of overseas trado." Use of American foreign trade ex hibition ships, Mr. McLean said, would enable hundreds of American manufacturers periodically to exhibit their products before thousands of foreign buyers. Such exhibitions in charge of competent salesmen, he de clared, would make possible a vast co-ordinated American foreign sell ing organization. "Moreover,' said Mr. McLean, "the exhibitions are ab solutely necessary to meet the com bined plans of hundreds of British manufacturers who aro backing tho organization of tho British products touring exhibition." Furthermore, said Mr. McLean, it would onablo a very largo number of Amorlcan manufacturers, who havo never thought in terms ot export trado, to enter that buslnoss at a comparatively smVll cost.
