Railroads under gorernmeat operation this year will spend nearly a billion dollars for additions, betterments aad equipment,' or approximately three times as much as la any oae of the last three years. Total capital expenditures approvld by the railroad admlaktratloa, as an nounced, are 1437,941,414. Of this big sum 1440,071.000 will be spent for ad ditions and betterments, such as sta tions and other property Improve ments; 2479,486,000 for equipment- cars and locomotives already ordered thru the railroad administration, and 118,203,000 for track extensions. The figures disclose Director Me Adoo's determination to let the rail roads make many improvements which they had neglected during the last three years, and postponing all possible projects requiring big expenditures. It alto is shown that the railroad Is not encouraging many extensions of lines during the war emergency, and in some cases projects already under Way hare been, discontinue!.
