SLOW REGISTRATION'
THERE are fourteen days in
which electors can register tor
the state and county primaries. There
are over 2,000'people, or one-half of
the county's voting strength, 'to be
registered.
There la not a great deal of excuse
for this delay. In every precinct there
is a registrar, and the county clerk's
office here has been reminding all vis
itors of the need of registering. But
still, only half of the people entitled
to vote have qualified themselves for
the May balloting.
Next week the clerk's office will re
main open a couple of hours fn the
evenings to accommodate the people
whose hours of employment makes It
impossible for them to register dur
ing the usual business hours at the
court house. It is to be hoped that
the mill and factory , employes will
take advantage of this, and' register
In sufficient strength to make what
ever candidates are nominated the
choice of the majority of their parties.

N RECENT MONTHS the laboring
men of America have had a prac
tical demonstration of the Increased
wages that follow an increased de
mand for labor. American manufac
turing establishments have been ex
ceedingly busy not only in the pro
duction of munitions of war, but also
in the manufacture of articles which
we have heretofore received in con
siderable quantities from the nations,
which are too busy now with interna
tional conflicts to engage in manu
facture for export.
This demonstration of the value of
busy factories should not be lost upon
American laborers. It should require
nothings more than this to convince
them of the desirability of the enact
ment and maintenance of a protective
larin, wnicn win esiaousn ana mam
tain factories in this country for the
direct employment of labor and the
Indirect employment of producers of
... j
commodities needed by the factories
or by those who labor therein.
