He' tofori. son not be got together on any subject of I .. . . interest and importance to the com munity welfare? It may be ventured that there are few communities that do not suffer from misrepresentation of this sort. While people who are familiar with conditions can make due allowance for slanderous stories of this sort, the stranger may not do so; and often he leaves with an unfavorable opinion of the people and the community only because he came In contact with the community's enemies instead of Its friends. The United States, as a whole, for several decades suffered from just this sort of misrepresentation. Our citizens touring abroad and those most In the public eye at home did not properly represent the best In American life. Consequently visitors to our own land and foreigners who observed our citizens visiting abroad acquired a wholly erroneous impres sion of America and Americans. It has required Wny years to overcome even In a small degree the influence thus exerted and to regain in the eyes of the world the good name that the people and the government of the United States deserve. In fact, most foreign people today Judge us largely from our own criticism of ourselves as reflected In the public press; and if we are In contempt with them. It Is to a great extent because we display a contempt for their good opinion. MT. While the laws are still being evaded they are not being so openly defied. This is one good sign at least. It is a crime.agalnst nature to work little children. The Creator intended that the child should romp and play, and be in the open exercising. It never was Intended that children should be dwarfed physically and mentally by being converted Into ma ines to enrich a few wealthy manu facturers. Men as well as women m every state should lend their efforts to se cure better child labor laws, and to see that tbe laws are enforced liter ally. Greedy employers will, of course. Insist they must have children to perform certain tasks, but It Is In human to employ young' boys and girls In cotton, glass and other factor 's, and underpay uaa. They are entitled to protection, and If their families are too poor to afford them I wai protection, men society must aee that It la extended. Enroll as a mem ber of the anti-child labor forces.
