The invention of the electric lamp came In those strenuou days. Tho world bad become familiar already with the big arc lamp, and was using it In llghtbouseerin public parka and on streets, but It wanted a light that could bo used Indoors in small units, comparable with wax and tallow can dles, gas Jets and the oil lamp. Work went on day and night In those years of 1878 and 1879. To go off to sleep was regarded almost as treason. Oae might get a wink or two at the lab oratories, if some 'place could be found. Edison, himself, in spite of alt roports to the. contrary, had to get a nap once In a while. One of hla re- i sorts was tho cupboard under the stairway, where be -slept among ho dust brooms and scrubbing palls. He also showed great agility in sleeping insllde a roll-top desk so far aa la known, this Invention has never been patented. In tho little old laboratory In Menlo I'ark, N. J., Edison and his staff worked day and night to And any thing under the sun that would bane together as a "filament,' when the electric "Juice" waa turned into It. Generally the darned stuff did not "stay put." but blew up before yon could say Jack Robinson. Hut one long-remembered day, October 21, 1879, as Edison aat at a beach with an odd-shaped crude little electric lamp in front of bin, he turned on the electric current. Te xninll horseshoe shaped filament la its glass bulb sjave forth a glow of light and the problem waa solved. In 1891 te Jnveated the moving picture machine, which has nude pos sible tho moving picture theater la every city, town and village where there is electric current. When the European war broke out, Auguat 1, 1914, Edison, realising the Impossibility of procuring the neces sary quantities of auny chemicals from Germany, began experimenting with auch chemlcala In hla laboratory. Being a heavy user of carbolic acid, he erected a plant for Ita manufacture and on the eighteenth day after start ing the construction of the plant waa making the acid. Four weeks later he waa making 4,000 pounds of the acid each day. On the night of December 9, 1914, Edison's plant at Went Orange, N. 3., was the scene of a great consecra tion. Early nest morning n gang of men were at work clearing up the wreck. Hundreds more were added during the day, and work waa contin ued day and night. Within thirty-el. hours after tho fire Edison had gtves full orders for the complete rehanni- tatlon of tho plant. In the thlrty-slx years following Edison's Invention, there has been made over 600,000,000 electric In candescent lamps.
