IAMATH FALLS mar wall take glance at what a slater city of ours la dolax. aad that Is Ashlaad. They hare aome real boosters there. aad are starting oat after thlaga. But recently they hare completed a bath house, which they are deTelop Ins or preparing to derelop Into a sanitarium, aad It has been done by the people to a great extant, the dty hating furnished the bonds for con struction. While we are hollering about calamity, hard times and headed straight for bankruptcy said chron ics coming from certain quarters other cities In the state are looking ahead and working for the future. Are we going to keep pace with them? Aro we going to keep, up, or go down? Ashland Is working through lta Commercial Club and Its women's auxiliaries, and they are doing things. It U now up to us to work with our Commercial Club and give it erery possible support. We hrre a num ber of projects here under way that are worthy of work and attention. and mean much to this county. If the reclamation service does not come through with the money promised us. let's forget it and go ahead. We want it, but let's not sit down and not play because we do not get It Other places want things, too. which they do not get. If we work and do something for ourselves, boost and make them come through with tno things wo want by sheer force later on, they will come throuah blav ger than we expect they will have to. The main thing Is to keep chug ging aiong on what we have, keeping up ana working on all the projects, but making advancement alone son lines. The others will cam Here is what the secretary of the Asniana Club says in Pertland: Ashland, the metropolis of Jack son county, has ambitions to become a great tourist city." M.' J. Duryea, director of publicity ortne Asniand Commercial Club, says "the city la bscking its ambition with the expenditure of 1175,000 on parks and mineral water baths. VMr. Duryea is in Portland, and is enthusiastically calling attention to the wonders of this dty and county. He says the city has acquired sixty acres oi paru, Has twenty-fire miles of scenic drives, and in the nelghbor- nooa are torty sulphur springs. Water from one of these springs is being piped to the city, and is to be one of the attractions. "Besides these things he reminds one of the wonderful Josephine coun ty caves, and Crater Lake, and Pell can Bay, and asks why, with all these natural attractions and a climate that m lavoraoje me year around, .hnnid Ashland not become a tourist city of .anBBBBBBBBBBBBam 0Ci IsBBBBBBBralaBPai I BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBaBBa! The solution of this Mrs. Floreaca SctaeMer Forney Tho arrest of T. O. Forney, the Washington attorney, In Pittaburg on the charge of having made aa attack on bu latner-m-iaw, t. rranaun Schneider, a candy manufacturer of Washington, has resulted in the repu diation of her husband by Mrs. For ney. She has Issued a formal state ment repudiating his name forever. Mrs. Fornef signed the statement- with her maiden name, Florence Schneider. "The statement attributed to Tom Forney that he has received a letter from me Is false.". Mrs. Forney says In her statement. "I repudiate his name. I am too loyal to'my father." Members of the Schneider family put no faith In the theory that Forney Is of unsound mind. They believe that his alleged attack on Mr. Schnei der was the result of a plot conceived many months ago. Inal adherents of tho safety first Idea. So It la with tho human race. Men wore wary of the perils of animal forco. All men went armed. The In stinct still remains. Wo stilt fear brute violence. Children aro told that If thoy are not good the bogles or bears will get them, and many a little youngster has seen these creaturajMn his dreams. But the practical dsasisr of attacks by wild animals Is now In finitesimal, and the blessings of good government have made almost un necessary any precautions by the Indi vidual against an assault by his neighbor. What la the greatest factor In tho solution of this problem? Simply stated It la this: Educato the man. It is an extremely superficial treatment of U subject of Industrial accidents to say that the laborer Is negligent, and 'that he should avoid theso dan gers. The experience of no ono fac tory can be sufficient to show all the dangers In any Industry. How, then, can one laborer In that factory Judge intelligently of his danger If ho has not tho facts beforo him, If, perhaps, problem, then, largely Ilea In educat ing men In the nature of ImxanU that surround them. In many of tho states thW moo ment for safety education Is already well under way. Tho public is being aroused, school children aro being lec tured, workmen In mills aro being stimulated to greater care. 1'lctures, printed warnings, posters, statistics graphically portrayed, theso aro tho means used In tho new movement. All hands from tho employer down work ing together for n decrcaso of acci dents, this Is tluvnow Industrial Ideal. Tho difficult problom Is to atlmulato the Imagination to a realization of danger. Just as tho mind was awak ened to an instlnctlvo knowledge of tho old dangers of bruto force. Crlmo Involving peraonal violence Is hideous and deplorable, and yet In difference to tho hazards of ovory-day llfo Is ten fold mofo terrible in Its re sults, And tho next stop In Indus trial and social progross In Oregon Is to awaken employers aud workinon to rcallzo this fact. This Is tho task of safety education. Old Soldiers Qaarrel, One Dead United Press Service ROSEBURQ, July 13. As a result of a quarrel, Chas. "Don't forget that pounds and pints are cash, and should be given tho same consideration as change. "Don't feel that you are doing something wrong or to be ashamed of if you ask the dealer to weigh your purchase a second time. "If you think you are not getting the correct weight or measure, go to the county sealer. If the dealer has cheated you, give the .county sealer the name." These aro a few "hunches for house wives" set forth by William C. Hen dricks, chief deputy of the state de partment of weights and measures. There have been sixty-five county sealers and a number of deputies ap pointed by the state sealer. They are testing and sealing scales and meas ures ana are rounding np violators. It Is to the Interest of the public to aid in the work by reporting to the coun ty sealer. Purchasers can help by re porting to county sealers when they think they have been cheated. Hen dricks has found that a single family has been "short measured" nnd short weighted" out of as much as 125 worth of provisions in ono month. "i neiiove that 95 per cent of the dealers mean to be honest," says Hen dricks, "but one dishonest dealer can do K lot of damage. For Instance, we had a case whore a dealer was selling sugar for one cent a pound less than another grocer across the street Tho second dealer began losing customers, but well knew that he could not cut the price of sugar and give honest weight. Rather than have purchasers pass him by, he began cutting the weight.
