V " k, 7IL-V LLLLLLLLLLV aE LLLLLLLLt PORTLAND. May 15, Th vaca tion of reclamation tervice withdraw als of lands covering portions ot four townships in northern Klamath coun ty was recommended to the depart ment at Washington a month ago, said . G. Hopson. engineer of the reclamation service, with offices In the Central building. These are the lands which J. W. Brewer, manager ot the farm lands bureau ot the state Immigration com mission, reported as not being neces sary to the reclamation service in power development or in connection with the plan of state and govern ment co-operation in reclamation of lands in the Deschutes basin. The commission has written to the secre tary ot the interior, the Oregon sen ators and the governor, urging that immediate vacation of these lands be secured and the thirty-day preference clause favoring actual homesteaders over holders of scrip be incorporated. It has been feared it the reclama tion service should suddenly vacate these lands, which are largely covered with yellow pine, that timber specu lators holding scrip might get the claims and actual homesteaders lose home making opportunity. Mr. Brewer has reported that lands ot Deschutes and Paulina forest elim inations not In the reclamation with drawals contain only two hundred 160 acre and 320 acre claims, and that moro than this number of per sons desiring to die are already in the country. The best of the lands are lu tho reclamation service withdraw als. It has been difficult to learn why the reclamation service withdrew the yellow pine lands, or when It was pur posed to vacate tho withdrawals. It was understood the withdrawals had been made Immediately pfter Presi dent Wilson filed his order eliminat ing: lands for settlement from the na tional forest. A request for information has brought the following Informatien: 'Those lands were already with drawn by the reclamation sen Ice. The order of withdrawal states that portions of lands are Included in withdrawals for power purposes and In connection with proposed co-operative Irrigation project, of tke state sf" land federal gevernments: the most 'taluablc agricultural land Is appro-Iprlati-tl or under reclamation or pow ler it withdrawals, and may be with (held for years for possible future rec lamation." In the oplnlou ot Mr. Ilrewer, this I statement ludlcates that the Wash ington officials of the reclamation ser vice do not know how the lands lie la the elimination, and that they appar ently have not availed thenuehes of the information In powaalon of the local office, of the ervlc The llurluys Fred and Kvn who opened their three-night engagement at the Star theater last night, w-n well received by the Star patrons. CTO., AT TIIK lOLUNO I'MKrKS. CJK)I VOTK (Herald Special Service) WASHINGTON, D. C, May 15. The best way to kill individual dan delion plants Is to cut off their tops and put a pinch of xalt (about a thimbleful) on the surface ot each ez rosxl root. This will kill most of them. As salt, if generally applied, ruins soil, the salt should be used sparingly, and applied only to the root-tops of the dandeloln. The United Statea department of agriculture has for some time been testing various poUons to discover the most efficient means of eradicat ing this troublesome weed from the lawns, but although othere have been Ml I Vallev Pride Flour S ! FOK SALli IN KLAMATH KALL8 at ASHLAND PIIU1T STORE I '1 found satisfactory, the common salt Is beet for general use, as there Is no danger accompanying its applica tion. The department's specialists say that much effort Is wasted In merely cuttliiK off the dandeloln top without applying some poison to tho root that remains. The dandeloln has a tap root that grows deep Into the soil. and cutting off the top merely en courages the dandeloln to come up In a thicker growth. Tho tlmr; to eradlrate dandelolnu la In tho spring before the plant has bad time to form seed. The seed spreads rapidly, blown by the wind. The blossoms should be close mown before jthey have gone to seed, and salt (should then be applied to each root. JA man may be very diligent In caring for his lawn, and yet have seeds blown In from neighboring lawns. This Ih of such Importance to those dcnlrlng line lawns that it might be made u matter for community action. If the lawn is very full of this weed It is too tedious a procexn to treat each plant by the salt process, in this case two possible methods of eradication may bo recommended. Tho first method In to thicken the stand of wrass to tend to crowd out the dandeloln. The grass should be put into u vigorous condition by top dressing with well rotted manure or fertilizer In the fall and by receding In this places. Tho second method, advised In ex treme instances, Is to start all over again, plowing up and re-seedlng the lawn. With tho postofllcc, banks court house and saloons closed, election day ia comparatively quiet, as the men and women of Klamath Kails go to tho polls to cast their ballot for party nominations. The effect of the wo men In politics Is most noticeable by the conduct of the men at the polling place, In spite of the rain this morning, there was a fairly good vote cast EIGHTH GRADERS HAVE HARD EXAM TWKVTV.TWO LOCAL I'UI'IL PAHH AND HLVTKKX AUK COXDI.
