High waves washed over tho New Jersey coast from Sandy Hook to Cape May during tho storm which raged on the Atlantic recently. The oil tank steamship Oklahoma was lost and thirty of hor crew drowned. But most of the damago was done to the homes of the millionaires along the coast nnd to large hotels there. The Hotel Octagon at Sea Bright was J completely destroyed. One residence! not far from It was wrecked. The' damage has been estimated at several million dollars. This part of the Jersey coast Is realty a peninsula, bounded on one side by the ocean and for some dls- tance down by the Shrewsbury river. The land Is not more than tan feet above high water In many places. An ordinary high tide does not reach the level of tho streets of the towns along the coast. Many New York and Phil acdlphla millionaire have built mag nificent summer homes along the1 stretch of low beach ror many mllea.jaei and strong wind of tho storm. Jersey coast (hut unprotected asln.
