He boarded at the than Lake aide Inn. conducted by Mr. McMil lan, and claimed there that hit real name wa tometblng more elaborate than Lumm. The name he claimed waa hU had a aort of truly rural, ar boreal, Eagllah aound, Ilk Wyncote, Hempatead or Suffolk. It wa not any one of thoa name, to be ure. but sounded Just aa much like real money aa any of them. He did not oiplaln to any great extent how It came that with hla Scandinavian ap pearance and dialect, and hi using the name Lumm, hla real name should be something that sounded so much different. HI stay at the Lakeside Inn In volved some expenae to the Inn. for he failed to come through with the necessary coin of the realm with which to defray the bill for hla board aad room, clalatJng that hla wall-to- do father waa coming to XlaauU Falla to help him out. But father withheld himself from the view of old Klam ath, and son Carl would migrate back to the hotel each time, evidently dis appointed. The manner of hla leav ing Klamath Falla waa readily pro vided for by one of these trips, for the laat time be put on his bt dud to meet father he went to Midland, It 1 presumed. Midland, aa I well known, I popular a a suburban sta tion for boarding outbound train, uaed by those who with to avoid the pain of parting often Involved by lay ing farewell. Lumm then owed the Lakeside Inn something over 170 It waa for the soclallat picnic last Labor Day that Lumm worked dili gently telling ticket. He got real money for the ticket and kept It all. "Foghorn" John Duquer, who 1 (peaking In Central Point today If hir Itinerary work right, came along here about the same time to give a series of reason feasts, and, as waa his wont, Lumm waa la need of mon ey, as wa demonstrated by the turn of event later. It waa decided to have a collection to get Duquer habil iment, with Lumm to aaaemble, col lect, gather and otherwise scrape to gether part of the money. He did to. retaining It, aa he had a penchant for doing, and It waa not until be bad for saken Klamath Fall that this little peccadillo waa discovered. There Waa another soclallat organ iser, or speaker, who visited Klamath Fall, with whom Lumm wished to be persona grata, that la to aay, nice and friendly-like. Thla visitor' name was Decker. Lumm proposed to get aim a ault of clothe, and this propo sition, to Decker' ear, appeared to sound quite reasonable and rational; So It waa arranged that Decker waa to have a ault of clothes. They were duly obtained from a Klamath Fall clothier, on whose books they were rnarged. coueciea rrom others the amount necessary to buy said clothes, and kept the money. The clothier wa left "waiting at the church." When Lumm left here one social ist organiser waa to go to Ashland shortly to apeak, to Lumm. aeelng a chance to make aay while old Sol waa shedding his brilliance, hied him to Ashland aa advance man for the speaker. For some time the "guilty or not guilty" stunt has been performed for the city of Klamath Falls by Judgu Leavltt, and there have beeu thotu who have been forced to remark that, while the Judge may be small lu stature, he makes It up In what ho say, especially when It couieii tltnu to say: "It la the Judgment uf ttio court," etc., etc. ,. It was Intended to begin criminal pro ceedings against Lumm thea. but the warrant wa not sworn oift before Lumm boarded a train and left Aah land. BE OH THE LOOKOUT m THE ALFALFA WEEVIL In the state of Utah an Insect peat boa appeared which la doing much harm to the alfalfa crop, write Prof. Thoa. Shaw. Thla Insect (phytono- mu pos tides) baa been known for a long lime In the old world. For many decade. If not centuries, It ho preyed upon the alfalfa of Southern Europe, Western Asia and Northern Africa. In this .country It was first noticed on tha outskirts of Salt Lake City, Utah, In 1004. lu ravages bad become so extended by 1907 that the attention of the Utah Experiment SUtlon was called to It. By 1911 It had reached part of Wyoming and Idaho adjecent to Utah. In 1909 the governor of Utah appealed to tho United Statea department of Agricul ture to aid the Utah Experiment (Na tion In fighting the peat. Since that time the department baa employed scientists to try and find some effect ive mean of combating the peat. The alfalfa weevil I thu described la Bulletin No. tit, department of entomology, United States department of agriculture, by Prof. F. M. Web ster: It Is a small, rather Insignificant appearing beetle, slightly under one- lourtn or an Inch long, of a brown color, mixed with gray and black hair arranged In Indistinct spot and stripes on the hack." The eggs are laid in the spring and arly summer within the stems or on the buds and leaves, and they batch wlthlu about ten day. The larva are small greenish worms with a black head. When full grown they are about one fourth of an Inch lone. They prey upon the crop buds, thnl leaves and even upon the stalks. The1 damage resulting may vary with thei conditions from vtry slight to almost ' complete destruction of the cuttlnv. Tho hay obtained fro mlnfested field I very woody, because of the abteaee of leaves, and It It much more liable to inducing coughing when fed to horses. Various methods of Ahtln lv. oeen tried. These have only been n.r. tlally Huccessful. These include: disc Ing to stimulate grewth: arailn with sueep; should be adopted In unlufealed areas to prevent the Introduction of the weevils. Of course. In areas uear to Infested territory, the Invasion will occur through the migration of tho weetlls In the spring of the year Hut the fact that the beetle came to Utah from the old world, makes It clear that Invasion may come In tohet ways. It may.be that It may come In poorly cleaded alfalfa seed It may certainly come la alfalfa hay. It would be nothing abort of a calamity to have this Innect Introduc ed Into Montana, where the future promise so much In regard to the growing of alfalfa and also alfalfa seed. It would seem to be eminently wise to make sure In all arras where alfalfa Is Imported that It does not come from an Infested rtglon, Wheth er the Insect can live In an area wlib winters like Montana and the Da ko las haa not been ascertained.
