ORRGON THVRMDAV, MAttCH HI, 101)1 THK PROIILKM OP THK FKKI1LK MINOKD FKKDLB MlNHEO person are thosewho lack one or more mental traits that are socially Im portant. All defectiveness Is a per sistence of an Infantile condition; a failure of development ot certain so cially Important tralta. Putting aside the old legal definition of a feeble minded person that he was a parson who could not count or number twen ty pence, or could not tell who wri tils father or mother, feabte-mlndo:-ness aa ordinarily understood consists In an aggregation ot the defective' trails that are socially Important, and that It eilsU In all degrees. Any of the defects may occur alone, or two or more ot them may be found to gether In ono Individual, and such defectiveness Is often not recognised aa such, but It Is tho multi-defectives who constitute the main problem or the feeble-minded, or those who are socially Inadequate. Among the well known defects possessed by tnsny In dividuals are word-blindness, fliure- bllndness, color-blindness, etc., or number defectiveness, attention de fectiveness, memory defectiveness. emotion defectiveness, moral defec tiveness, and these defects are In gen eral hereditary, and are the result ot corresponding defects In thi germ plasm of the parents. If both parcn's be mental defectives the eomblnstlon ot tbe germ cells will almost cvrtsln ly result In a feeble minded child This Interesting and most Import ant subject Is discussed editorially by tba Journal of the American Medical Association, which comments on a re cent article by Dr. Charles B. Daven port In the Popular Science Monthly. In prehistoric times these defec tives were controlled by the elimina tion of those Incapable of meeting tbe ever Increasing complexities of civilisation. Death from cold or hun ger ot those who bad not acquired tbe trait of hoarding supplies, or by vio lence, of those wbo did not repsect tbe property rights of others, ellml nated many. Today we have revers ed this process of elimination of tho runt animal strains. We protect in Institutions scions of weak stocks tip to the period of reproduction, end then set the Individuals free, with the rMult of producing large numbers ot feeble-minded, who In turn nrn care fully nurtured up to the reproductive period, are again set free to repio- duce, and ao the stupid work goes on of preserving and increasing our so cially unlit strains. Some way must be devised to eliminate these defec tive family llaea or they will prove disastrous to society. The eugealsts have recognised tbla defect In our humanitarian methods, and are al ready endeavoring to reconelln or conform those methods to the re quirements of eugenics, which seeks to eliminate the feeble minded and defective by tbe propogatlon of the at, only. MANUAL TRAINING BOYS DO OOOO WORK Tbe boys of tbe manual training department of tbe blgh school are completing five tables at present, and tbey hope to be able to send the tops to Portland some time this week, so tbat they can be polished. These tables are the handiwork of tho stu dents, and show in a amall measure, Just how tbey are progressing along tbla line, and Just what thsy can do when It comes to turning out wood work. The tablea are to be used in the domestlcsclence department, and It waa thought tbat since they would be eventually necessary as a part of this line of work It would be a good plan to have the boys make them. It also meant the saving of many dol lars on tbe part of tbe school, slnco each table like those turned out by the boys would cost In tba neighbor hood of ItB. Another phase ot hav ing tbe boya of tbe school do the work would be that tbey in this way gat a great deal of practice in their work.
