TRACK MEETTHIS SEASON OXK OK THR LARGEST KVKR 8KKX ON THR COAST WILL BB rULLKD OFF IN AVQCBT AT THR ABTjOR CRNTRNNIAL Special to the Herald ASTORIA, May 4. What proaUeco to bo the greatest track meet em held under the auspices of the PacMe Northwest Association of the Amateur Athletic Union U billed tor tha Aatorla Centennial celebration, when the na nus! championships are decided dar ing tho last week In August, moat likely August 26th. At least ttty of the best athletes In the Nbrthweat will be present from tha varloua clubs, while a- relay race open to every high school In tho state la planned by tha Centennial Athletic committee, a handsome silver cup being given at the prise. Gold 'and silver medals will bo allotted the winners la the various field and track events In tha amateur champtoaealne. T. Morris Duaae, eecretary of the P. N. A., who resides In Portland, la doing much to help along the center.- nlal meet. Originally It was planned to hold the annual athletic champion ililpt on Multnomah Seld in Portland, but ttiat was found Impracticable on account of the recent Are, which de stroyed the club house aad grand' stand. Multnomah very generously turned the meeting over to the Aa torla Amateur Athletic Club, which will be responsible for It success this year. Secretary A. Oulllume of the Astoria Club is co-operating with Mr. Dunne In securing the best athletes In the Northwest to attend. The Seattle Athletic Club, accord ing to Captain Rralley Olsh, Is pre paring to send a team of eight men to the national championships at Pitta burg In June, and wit return thU team to Aatorla Intact for the August meeting. Glsh Informed Mr. Dunne that Seattle would help make the Aa torla celebration famous. The Spokane Athletic, Club will send a team of from elgh't to twelve men, and the Vancouver, B. C. Ath Ictlc Club will be represented by Its famous al-round atbelete, Gills, aad a team of Its beat men. Olllla com peted against the world champion. Martin Sheridan of New York,' and was barely beaten out. He alone will be a big drawing card. Tho Multnomah Amateur Athletic I Club will send a full team, aad la addition to Dan Kelley, holder of the worlds 100 and 300 yard champion' ships la the sprints nnd a broad Jump er who represented America nt the Londou Olympic gamaa la 1101, wqi also secure the attendance of the world famous Forrest Bmtthson, the only man who ever topped the 130 nrd hurdles In tea than 15 second. Captain Jack Hlekaoa of the Multno mah Club is already assured of Kel ley In the broad Jump, and feela rea sonably aura that he can Induce Bnilthson, who ia now In California, to return and run for the club In tha hurdles. The high school relay promisee to be a big hit with a four man team from' each high school in the state. Athletics In the varloua high schools has grown wonderfully la the past five years, and there la not a school of any pretension In the Northwest that does not boast of a school track team. Each year the big colleges, tha State University at Eugene aad tho Oregon Agricultural College at Camilla, sponsor meeta at which tha championships are held for high school boys, paying the eipeasea of a six man team. Thla has fostered an athletic spirit sueh aa no other thing Is capable of dolag, and when tha crowds gather la tha old baseball grounds la Aatorla, which have been made over Into an up-to-date athletic field, they will witness the best ef orta of the best type of Oregon boy. While the date' baa not been defl- nltely arranged, It Is very likely that August 36th, which falls on Saturday, will be Anally selected. r. n RBALBSTATB .
