Houston, swindled the American Bank and Trust company ot Klamath Falls ot IS.500. where he played the Walllng tord rolo to perfection, and then he came to Portland nnd under the name ot J. A. Rom ho swHidted a local bank out ot 12.500. which sum he promptly invested In Portland real estate. York is considered one ot the clev erest swindlers In the country, and for the past yenr the Pinkcrtons have been on his trail. He has buncoed big concerns for many thousands ot dollars, nnd bought tracts ot land In Oregon and Washington, buying out right an entire township In Washing ton. Ills operations have extended over the Pacific Coast and In tho south, and but for tho fact that he wanted to take a bath, York might today bo a free man. York had a cork leg. Whllo In San Francisco he bad a new lee made. for which ho deposited $50, when the price was f ISO. Thus York beat the cork leg manufacturer out ot $100 until one day, when he wanted to bathe and to do so must remove tho leg, he lost the key. York sent to tho maker tor a duplicate key, accom panying It with tho $100 ho had neg lected to pay originally. The lost key was found by tho Pinkcrtons,- and with this bit o( metal as a clew the detectives traced tho swindler finally to tho steamer President when It left San Francisco for Seattle. P. K. Ahern, of the Plnkerton Bank ft Bankers' Association, was advised by telegraph, nnd with the sheriff of King county caused York's arrest when he step'ped ashore yesterday. Henry E. Von Groenewald, In cbnrgo ot tho Plnkerton offleo In Port land, had been searching for York tor tho trick ho turned on a local bank a tew weeks ngo, under tho name ot Rots. Yon Orocnowald say that York Is an ox-convict, who was n tele graph operator. Tho swindler secured B blanks of tho Northern Express Company's money orders, and by means ot theso secured $10,000 in coin. Last year ho trimmed James Stone, ot Chicago, for $900. In Ken tucky ho operated extcnslrely, nnd touched the State Bank ot Chicago tor $5,000. Last April ho swindled the Amcrlcnn Bank ft Trust Company of Klamath Falls for $8,500, nnd then came to Portland, cleaned up $3,500, and going to Seattle swindled tho Amcrlcnn 8avlng ft Trust Company for $1,339.. In May he swindled 5 Belllngham bank for $2,300. Representing himself ns Frank B. Houston, York visited tho Klamath Falls Investment Company nt San Francisco nnd said he had a largo amount of money to Invest. He was recommended to go to Klamath Falls, which he did, and there ho rivalled Walllngtord.
