When we came over tho ridge over looking Tule lake about three-fourths of a mite from the Drothcrton ranch, we saw two women and a boy and girl in front of the houso who seemed to be regarding our advance appre hensively, aa we could distinguish n gun In the hands of one woman. As wo drew nearer the woman handed the gun to one ot tho children and came towarda us, wringing her bands and crying. Between her spells ot sobbing we gleaned the story of the killing of her family as far as she know It. According to her story, the Indians did not do their murderous work In that locality until the morning of the day after tbe killing of tha Boddy family. Being, doubtleas. afraid of pursuit, they bad paaaed the Interim la some secluded place overlooking the valley, when, seeing ao attempt waa mad by the troops' to follow them up, and that tbe settlers were. unaware of any trouble, they canto out of their hiding place aad fell on the Brotbertona and Henry Miller. who lived a few rods away from the Brothertona across tbe state line. Some ot the men were In the Junipers cutting wood. They were first killed. Next Miller and a 10-year-old son of Mr. Brotherton. who were driving the teams hauling wood. Having killed all this party, tbey rode rapidly down towards where a German sheep herder named Seever of Soover and another ot tho Brotherton boys were herding a band of sheep a little more than a quarter of a mile from tho cabins, aad In plain view. Mr. Saevor waa mounted, while tha boy waa on foot. Hera we left our family and, with our comrades, returned to Clear lake, reaching tber after night.
