TIIK LAW OK FINDIXa Tho law of finding Is this: The finder has a clear lltlo against the wholo world except the owner. Tho proprietor of a hotel or a shop ha no right to demand tho property or premise. Such proprietor may niako regulations In regard to lost property which will bind their employee, but they cannot bind the public. Tho law of finding wa declared by the king's bench over 100 ears ago, In which case tho facts were these: A person found a wallet containing a sum of money on a shop floor. Ho handed tho wallet and contents to tho shop keeper to be returned to tho owner. After throe years, dur ing which time the owner did not call tor his property, tho flndor demanded tho wallet and tho money from tho shop koopcr. Tho latter refused to deliver them up on the ground that thoy were found on his premise. The former then sued tho shop keeper, and it was hold as above set forth, that against all the world but tho owner tho title of the flndor Is per fect. And tho Under has been held to aland In the place of tho owner, so that he was pormltted to prevail In an action against a person who found an article which the plaintiff had originally found, but subsequent ly lost. Tho police have no special rights In regard to articles lost, un less those rights are conferred by statute. Receivers of articles found are trustees for the owner or finder. Thoy have no power In the absence of special statute to keep an article against tho finder any more than the finder has to retain an article against tho owner.
