Along the line of roads it may not be out of the way to say the United States government contemplates the construction of an automobile road entirely around Cra ter Lake, on an easy grade, so built that It will be posslblu to reach !.." various high peaks without dirtli til ty. When this Is accomplished . will be practicable to build roads i Into the park from points heretofore Horn In Lnugell considered beond reach of the lake, i .September Cth. l!0s there was formed a lone of red lot lava SOUO feet high. Ill'I.LKTI.V ITF..MS. All roads and trails within the park uro built and maintained by the de partment of the Interior." Crater I-ako. Is located on the sum mit of the Cascade range In southern Oregon. It rests In the crater of a mountain, which hat recently been christened Maznma, and the top of which at some time, dlbappeared, leuvlng a cauldron 4000 feet deep and five and one-half miles In diam eter. The water fills tills cauldiou half full. Near the western shore of the lake Is u cinder tone Sir, feet high, known as Wizard Island, In the top of which there Is still another extinct crater, Near the shore on the eastern side Is u lingo pile of Jagged rocks, which have received the name of Phantom Hock. With these ex ceptions there are no Isluuds, and the water of the lake Is so clear that a six-Inch white plate tan bu seen at a depth of 92 feet. When looked up on from the surrounding cliffs this color Is of the deepest possible blue, except close to shore, where It blend Into a rich turquoise. Seen from Its surface, the remarkable blue deep ens and assumes a brighter hue. Us ually In the early hours of the morn ing the surface of the luko Is llko glass, und In Its depth Is reflected every object which the earth and sky contain. At night, when this con dition prevails, and the moon Is full, the view that Is I effected In the still ed depths Is beautiful beyond desctlp tlori, us wall. as awe-Inspiring. There can be seen, more clearly than tn a mirror, the milky way with Its myr iad of stars unknown to a less clear atmosphere, the constellations which shine with a brlfihtneni umli earned of In other climes, und the moon, which Rooms largor and more brllll uut thun anywhere else, and ull Out other glories of tlie heavens. The region about the lake Is full of hUturlc and legendary Interest. In the mysterious depths of the luUe, so the Indiana believe, dwells lb) great spirit, und until recontly no In dian dared1 scarcely look upon It fcr foar that the giant crawfish or drag on, which guarded the great Loa, or .spirit, would 'In Us wrath reach up valley, Siiudn, in .Mr nnd .Mrs. John Drl'coll, n son.
