The Grants Pass brewery is the first of these institutions which it is reported is to be converted intoa denatured alcohol plant. Klamath Falls has a brewery which is advertised for sale at sixty cents on the dollar, and it might be a good investment for some one, who desires to engage in a goad paying legiti mate business. Since the "De-natured Act" was passed by Congress, alcohol has leaped into fame, not merely as the humble servant of the pocket lamp, nor as the demon rum, but as a substitute for all the various forms of cheap hydrocar bon fuels, and as a new farm product, a new means of turning the farmer's grain, fruit, potatoes, etc., into that greatest of all powers, money. The common form of alcohol known as "denatured snirits" consists of alcohol to which one-tenth of its 1 j i 1 1 11 j i.. i 1 .,. .. ., . . ..... ... ..... .1. ... 1 Fltd Irnr I'rnul.lii ratahlirii claim to volume ui woou hicuhui, ur uuicr ueiiuiuriiiitj ugcuia Hit .. o y, .., b..m .. ...-,. h-cnl,!, M..rr County been aaaea, ior tne purpose 01 rendering tne mixture un drinkable. H-., at nuoiucv at NUinain raii,ijrr.,i(ln(0tl The general estimate of the value of alcohol for lighting gives it about double the power of kerosene, a gallon of alcohol as two gallons of the oil. Gasoline motors of automobiles are being adapted to alcohol fuel, with the result that a cheap power is obtained without the objec ionable odor. The use of denatured alcohol as a fuel has not yet been fully developed. Although alcohol has only about half of the heating power of gasoline, yet it has many valuable properties which may enable it to compete suc cessfully in spite of its lower fuel value. In the first place it is very much safer. Although alcohol has far less heating capacity than gasoline, the best experts be lieve that it will develope a much higher percentage of efficiency in motors than gasoline. Distilleries have already been established in Wash ington and other western states and the new- industry is spreading. It is predicted that the time is not far dis tant when the' farmer will be able to haul his surplus po tatoes beets or grain to his local distillery, and either re turn with the money in his pocket, or with fuel for farm engines, machinery and perchance his automobile.
