THE CORRUPT PRACTICE LAW
Voters of Oregon at the next election can not- do any
thing but vote. People of Oregon at the same time can
do nothing but watch the voters vole under pain of dire
and diverse penalties.
The friend who invites his friend in to have a drink
or-a cigar will be guilty of the crime of treating and so
will the man who gets the treat. Hoth will be subject to
a penalty.

state shall file typewritten statements and portrait
with the secrotarv of state if the office is a state office or
with the county clerk or the city auditor if the office is a1
county or a city one. Those opposing the candidates may
also send written arguments setting out why the candi
date should not be elected, provided that a copy of the:M'f"'
statement is sent to the candidate. It is provided in the!
law that nothing "of-a slanderous or libelous nature should)
be printed.
It is made unlawful for any person or organization to
ask candidates for any contribution of any kind. The
candidates can not be asked to buy tickets to a ball or
entertainment or to join any club. No corporation or
stockholder of any corporation can contribute to the cam
paign fund of either party.
It is also made unlawful for any candidate, or person
to wear badges or buttons near the polls on election day.
Any man who is caught trying to influence a vote on
election day is liable to a fine of from $25 to $100 and for
the second offense to imprisonment in the county jail.
All campaign literature must bear the name of the
author and that of the printer who printed it.
It is provided that a candidate shall not have his
name on the ballot unless he filts his itemized statement
of expenses a certain length of time before the election.
Neither shall he be given his certificate of election unless
he files his statement following the general election. It
is also provided that any district attorney who fails
prosecute for violation of the law shall be subject to for
feiture of his office.

The main interest in the Republican convention being
held in Chicago today is centered on the platform to be
adopted. The Pacific coast delegates to the Republican
convention will insist that a plank ba put in the platform ,
pledging the party to increase the fortifications on the
Pacific coast and build a greater navy.
