The Klamath Project Thu Klnnmth Project in the name that Iiuh been applied to thu rcclamii tion of about lOU.UOO ncrcn of land now iniuur ll.u overflow of tho Kluinath l.'iviT mill of Iower Klniiuilli I.ako and Tule lnke and tlm iiiiuatioii of iiliont li0,000 ncrua of volley land adjacent to thu Klamath Kivcr, along Hie conrac of LoNt Itivcr and tho tributary portion of the Rreat plali-au lyitiK chielly in Klamath County, Oregon, but ahm viuhracluK a part of Bialtiyou and Moiloo Conn-tii-H, Ciilifornln, a total area of 200,000 uctcH, Thu Project embrace! thu construction of a very i;ri'iit mileiiKu of canula, laterala and drainuuo canal and will havu ita principal aourco in Upper Klamath l.alte. Clear Lake and Homelly arc rcacrvoir aite whuru Hood water will bo impounded and utilized for irrigation of land included in the upper portion of thu Project. Work on tho main canal wbh started in the Spring of 1'JOU and the Unit unit of nine miles is now com pleted. About 13,000 acres of land will be irrigated from the flrat unit, the laterals for which aro being eoiiotnicled under tho supervision of tho engineers having charge of the Project. Jiy far thu largest proportion of the land under thu first unit is now in sagebrush and must be cleared and broken in time for crops in the Spring of 1908 Work on the sec ond unit is being done by tho Government and em braced nineteen miles of main canal and twenty-six miles of laterals to furnish water to about 20,000 additional acres of land. Work on this unit will be prnxi'cutcd ns rapidly iih possible. N'l-iii-ly onelinlf of Ihu area to be irrigated is now under water to n depth of from one to fifteen feet and will be reclaimed by a system of drainage to lower Die level of the rivers and lakes. A large part nf the Hwnmp land and practically nil of the vallny land in the Klamath linsin are held in private own ership and some in very largo tracts which must be sold in tracts of ICO acres or less under the regula tions governing tho perfection of a water-right. KLAMATH'S For iU development and pro- OREATEBT pcrity tho Klamath Basin most have NEED people, and the right kind of people at that. IU groat need is intelli gent, practical farmers, who understand the meaning of intensified and diversified farming; men who will buy land, not for speculative purposes, but with the idea of clearing off the sagebrush and making per manent and cemfortable homes. Such men ore bound to succeed. There is room for thousands of them. Developing Sugar beets have been grown ex- Various pcrimcntnlly throughout tho Klam- Industries irth Valley. Tho percentage of sugar is high, ns will be noted from the following analysis made by the United States De partment of Agriculture) from beets grown near sugar in beets, per cent., 21.7; sugar in juice, per rent., 21.1 ; I'tiefllcicnt of purity, 83.1. Kxperienee has demonstrated that excellent as paragus, onions and celery can be grown, the tule lands being very similar to those of tho Sacramento and San .Joaquin Valleys of California, where such vegetables nrc so successfully cultivated. Through out the world tho reclaimed marshlands are the best suited for the highest development of dairy inter ests. There is nn question that this will become a sugar beet producing section and that n number of facto ries will be built and operated with the development nf tho industry. All kinds of fruit adapted to the temperate zone thrive here apples, peaches, pears, cherries, prunes, plums, apricots and nectarines do well, and small fruits bear nbundnntly and of excellent quality. There are a great many munll orchards throughout the basin thnt prove the adaptability of the region to the profitable production of fruit. K. Ii. Smith, former president of the Oregon State Hoard of Horticulture, gives it as his opinion thnt the foothill lands are specially adapted to apple growing. Cultivation of the potato has passed beyond the experimental stage, the sandy loam of the uplands producing them in great abundance.. Klamath County wheat, grown without irrigation, took the premium nt tho New Orleans Exposition. Tho most important forage crop is alfalfa, the soil being peculiarly adapted to its growth. Exoess All landowners being required Holdings Must (o sell their excess holdings, there Be Sold Is n large area of good land for sale at reasonable figures, prices rang ing from' about $15 to $35 for unimproved, and $20 to $50 per acre tor improved land. Land adjacent to tho principal towns commands hbvher prices. The purchaser pays for the water right at a cost of about $18 per acre to be paid for in ten equal annual in stallments without interest. This amounts to less than the ordinary annual rental paid privato ditch companies. Some of tho irrigators of Klamath Val ley (and they are the most prosperous farmers) have ulready paid out to such companies fot water $60 per acre and rwn no water. All of these companies have been purchased by tho Government and included in tho system. No publio lands will be open for settlement for soveral years. ... OllmtU The upland soil is mainly a rich sandy and loam of great uniformity aud composed Soli largely of disintegrated and eroded lava with an admixture of volcauio ash mid diatoinaceous earth, the latter material of plant ori: gin, formed in the bottom of tho ancient sen which covered the greater part of the Great Basin, and of which Klamath Valley is a northwesterly extensiou. fliiflh Ball, characteristic of many of tho richest agri cultural sections of the world, including much of Italy and the great plains of India, is extremely fer tile, and of lasting productiveness. The lake uml tulo lands are made up of a volcauio soil containing much organlo matter, n vegetable accumulation of ages, aud It of a pentty nature. i The elimate is extremoly healthful and not severe.. There Is rarely any Winter weather before tho, latter part of December, anu nut uuio ccro weauier uunug the entire Winter. Tho annual precipitation la about fifteen Inches, with little raiu during the Summer BUY According to Season Groceries, the same as wearing apparel, should be bought according to seasons.
