The Klamath Project Tlm Klamath I'roject iu the name that hitK been applied to tlio rcoliiiim lion of uhout 100,000 acrcH of land now iinuer tho overflow of tho Klamath Itivi-r ami nf Iiowlt Klaniath Lnltu antl Tulu Jiitke nml thu irriKiitlon of about ll0,000 acres of valley Inml atljanunt to thu Klamath River, iiIoiik thu coiimo of I.ohI JCivur and tho tributary tiortion of tho great plalean lyinK chiefly in Klamuth County, Ureon, but alwj fiiibraciiiK a port of Uiakiyou and Moiloc Coun-lii-H, California, a total area of 200,000 ncrt'H. The Project embraces thu conatructiou of a very roil t mileage of canala, laterala and druinno canalf mid will have ita principal aourcu in Upper Klamath Laid1. Clear I,aku mid lloraefly are reaervoir Hitea uln.'K) llo od water will bu impounded and utilized for irrigation of luud incluileil iu the upper portion of tho l'roject. Work on tho main canal waa hturtcd in the Spring of 190G and tho firat unit of nine nTilca ia now com pleted. About 13,000 acrea of Inml will be irrigated from the firat unit, tho laterala for which are being etiiiHtriieted under tho Huperviaion of tho cnginecra haviiiK charge of the l'roject. liy far the largest pio)ortion of the land under the firat unit ia now in NiigebrttHh and muat be cleared und broken in timt for cropa iu the Spring of 1908- Work on the aec niitl unit ia being done by thu Government and cm hriiceii nineteen iiiIIl'h of main canal and twenty-nix inllc.i of luterula to f iiriiinh water to about 20,000 atlilitionul uerea of Inml. Work on this unit will be prosecuted aa rapidly na possible. NVurly one-half of thu area to be irrigated is now iiiiiIit water to a depth of from one to fifteen feet and will be r.-eliiimcd by a system of drainage to lower the level of thu rivers and lakes. A largo part of the swamp land and practically nil of the valley land in thu Klamath liasin are held in private own ership mid so ii io in very large tracts which must b9 soltl in tracts of 1(10 acres or less under tho regula tions governing the perfection of a water-right. KLAMATH'S For its development and prot- GREATEST polity the Klamath Basin mast have NEED people, and tho right kind of peopli at that. IU groat need is intelli gent, practical fanners, who understand the meaning of intensified and diversified farming; men who will buy land, not for speculative purposes, but with the idea of clearing off the sagebrush and making per manent and comfortable homes. Such men are bound to succeed. Then is room for thousands of them. Developing Sugar beets have been grown ex- Various perimentally throughout the Klnm- Induitries nth Valley. Tho percentage of ugor is high, as will be noted from the following analysis inndo by the United StateH De partment of Agriculture from beets grown near sugar iu beets, per cent., 21.7; sugar iu juice, per ent., 24.1 ; coefficient of purity, 83.1. experience has demonstrated that excellent as piirngiiN, unions mid celery can be grown, the tulu lands being very similar to thoso of the Sacramento ami San .lonquiu Valleys of California, where such vegetables art so successfully cultivated. Through out the world the reclaimed marshlands nru the best suited for the highest development of dairy inter ests. There is nn question that this will become a sugar beet producing section nml tliiit n number of facto ries will be built and operated with the development of the industry. All kinds of fruit adapted to the temperate one thrive here apples, peaehes, pears, cherries, prunes, plums, apricots nud nectarines do well, mid small fruits bear abundantly and of excellent quality. There are a great ninny small orchnrds throughout the basin that prove the adaptability of the region to the profitable production of fruit. K. 1;. Smith, former president of the Oregon State Hoard of Horticulture, gives it as his opinion that the foothill Innds are specially adapted to apple growing. Cultivation of the potato has passed beyond the experimental atagc, tho sandy loam of tho uplands producing them in great abundance. Klamath County wheat, grown without irrigation, took tho premium at the New Orleans Exposition. Tho most important forage crop is alfalfa, the soil being peculiarly ndnptrd to its growth. Excess All landowners being required Holdings Must to sell their excess holdings, there Be Sold is a largo area of good land for sale at reasonable figures, prices rang ing from about $15 to $35 for unimproved, and $20 to $50 per acre tor improved land. Land adjacent to the principal towns commands huther prices. The purchaser pays for the water right at a cost of about $18 per acre to be paid for in ten equal annual in. stallnienU withont interest. This amounts to less than the ordinary annual rental paid private ditch companies. Some of tho irrigators of Klamath Val ley (and thoy are the most prosperous farmers) have already paid out to such companies for water $G0 per acre and rwn no water. All of those companies havo been purchased by tho Government and included in the aystem. No public lands will be open for settlement for soveral years. OlimaU The upland soil is mainly a rich sandy and Toam of great uniformity and composed Soil largely of disintegrated and eroded luvu with an admixture of voleunio ash and diatomaceous earth, the latter material of plant ori gin, formed in the bottom of the ancient sen which covered the greater part of the Great Ilusiu, and of which Klamath Valley ia u northwesterly extension. Such soil, characteristic of many of the richest agri cultural sections of tho world, iucludiug much of Italy aud tho great plains of India, is extremely fer tile, and of lasting productiveness. The lake and tuie lands are made up of a volcanic soil containing much organio matter, a vegetable accumulation of ages, and is of a peatty nature. The climate is extremely healthful and not severe. There is rarely any Winter weather beforo tho latter part of December, and but little ecro weather during the entire Winter. The uunttal precipitation is about fifteen inches, with little rain during the Summer months, BUY According to Season Groceries, the same aa wearing apparel, should be bought according to seasons.
