The Klamath Project Tho Klamath Project In tho name Unit linn boon applied to tho rcclamiv Hon of about 100,000 acre of land now , , nnuer llio ovcrllow or the Klnmatli Hiver nml of I.ower Klamath Lako and Tulu Jioke ninl Hid Iri'iKation of about ji-0,000 ncrca of valley I11111I udjai't'iit lo the Klamath River, aloiiK thu coiiihu of l.OHt Hiver and tho tributary portion of tho great plateau lyliiK chielly in Klamath County, Oregon, but nlao embrneinK a part of SUkiyou and Modoo Coun tica, California, a total arco of 200,000 ncrcu. The l'roject cmbracca tho conatruction of a very urent mileagu of canala, latcrnla and druinago canali and will have it principal source in Upper Klamath . lake. Clear Lako and Jloraelly aro rciervoir aitea where Hood water will be impounded and utilized for irrigation of land included in tho upper portion of ' the l'roject. Work on tho main canal waa alarted in the .Spring of l'JOU and the llmt unit of nine mi lea in now com pleted. About 13,000 acrca of land will be irrigated from the lint unit, the latcrala for which are being coimtructed under the aupcrviaion of the cngineera having charge of tho l'roject. liy far tho largeat proportion of the land under tho iirat unit ia now in aagebruah and muat bo cleared and broken in time for crojia in the Spring of 1008- Work on tho aec ond unit ia being done by thu (Joverumcnt and cm brncea nineteen tnika of mnin canal and twenty-eix milcH of latcrala to ftiruiah water to about 20,000 additional acrea of land. Work on this unit will be proKccuted aa rapidly na poaaible. NVarly one-half of the area to be irrigated ia now under wuter to a depth of from one to fifteen feet and will be reclaimed by a'ayntcm of drainage lo lower the level of the river and lakca. A largo part of the awnmp land and practically all of the valley land in tho Klamath liaain aro held in private own. cntliiii and hoiiio in very large trade which inuat be old in trade of 100 ncrca or lea under the regula tion governing the perfection of a water-right. KLAMATH'S For its development and pro (JREATEST perity the Klamath Basin must have NEED people, and the right kind of people at that. Its great need is Intel. gent, practical farmers, who understand the meaning of intensified and diversified fanning; mon who will buy land, not for speculative purposes, but with the idea of clearing off the sagebrush and making per. manent and comfortable homes. Such men ore bound to succeed. There is room for thousands of them. Developing Sugar beets have been grown ex Various pcrimcntally throughout tho Khun- Industries ath Valley. Thu percentage of sugar ia high, aa will be noted from the following analyaia made by tho United States Do p.irtincnt of Agriculture from beets grown near Hiignr in becta, per cent., 21.7 ; sugar in juice, per rent., -M.1 j cocfllcient of purity, 63.1. Experience has demonstrated that excellent as pnragiiN, onions and celery can be grown, the lulu lands being very nimilar to those of the Sacramento and San .lomiuiu Valley of California, when; such vegetable are o aticcraHfully cultivated. Through, out the world thu reclaimed iiinrtililauds aro thu best united for the highest development of dairy inter cuts. There ia nn (tteation that this will become a sugar beet producing section and that n num'ier of facto, ries will be built and operated with thu development of tho industry. All kinds of fruit adapted to the temperate 7.0110 thrive here apples, peaches, pears, cherries, prunes, plums, apricots and nectarines do well, and smalt rruits bear abundantly nml or excellent quality. There are a great many small orchards throughout the basin that prove the adaptability of thu region to thu prolltablc production of fruit. K. I.. Smith, former president of the Oregon Stato Hoard of Horticulture, gives it us his opinion that tho foothill lands aro specially adapted to apple growing. Cultivation of the potato has passed beyond the experimental stage, the sandy loam of the uplands producing them in great nbuudauce. Klamath County wheat, grown without irrigation, took tho premium nt tho Now Orleana Exposition. Tho moat important forago crop ia alfalfa, tho soil being peculiarly ndapted to ita growth. Exoees All landowners being required Holdings Must to sell their excess holdings, there Be Bold a largo area of good laud tor sale at reasonable figures, prices rang ing from about $15 to $35 for unimproved, and $20 to $50 per acre lor improved land. Land adjacent to the principal towna commanda burlier pricca. The purchaser paya for the water right at a coat of about $18 per aere to bo paid for in ten equal annual in. atallmcnta witnont intereat. Thia nmount8 to leaa than the ordinary annual rental paid privato ditch companies. Some of the irrigatora of Klamath Val ley (.and they are the moat prosperous farmers) have already paid out to such companies for water $G0 per aero and rwn no water. All of these companiea have been purchased ty the Government and included in tho aystem. No pnblie lands will bo open for settlement for several yean. OUaiat The uplaud aoil is mninly a rioh Bandy tnd loam of great uniformity and composed goil largely of disintegrated and eroded lava with an admixture of volcanic ash and diatomaceoUB earth, the latter material of plant ori gin, formed in the bottom of tho ancient sea which covered the greater part of tho Great Basiu, and of which Klamath Valley ia a northwesterly extension. Sueh aoil, characteristic of many of tho richest ogri cultural sections of tho world, inoluding much of Italy and the great plains of India, is extremely fer tile, and of lasting productiveness. Tho lako and tulo landa are made up of a volcanio aoil containing much organio, matter, a vegetablo accumulation of ages, and ia of .a pcatty nature. The olimate la extremely healthful aud not severe. There ia rarely any Winter weather beforo tho latter part of December, and but little aero weather during the entire Winter. The annual precipitation ia about fifteen inchea, with little rain during tho Summer months. BUY According to Season Groceriesthe same as wearing apparel, should be bought according to seasons.
