Swingle la n pioneer ol Klamuth Comity. Uo is a conservative, business man nml has ma'le a success with bis own business venturer, nml U Is fair to assume that ho will do ns well with the county business, '10 Thu Klamath Project ia thu name Klamath that linn been applied to the rcclama Project tion of about 100,000 acren of land now under thu overflow of the Klamath llivrr nml of Lower Klamath Luke and Tula Lake nml the irrigation of about H-0,000 acren of valley Imiil mljnccni to thu Klamath Hiver, alotiK the cournc of Lout Hiver and thu tributary portion of the great plateau lying chiefly in Klamath County, Oregon, but iiIho i-mbraciiiK part of .Sinkiyou and Modoo Coun tiiH, California, a total area of 200,000 acrct). Tlio Project cmbracca the construction of a very great mileage of canal, lateral) and drainage eanauj nml will havo itM principal notircu in Upper Klamath Lake. Clear I dike und Howclly are rcaervoir sites where flood water will be impounded and utilized for irrigation of lund included in the upper portion of lliu Project. Worlc on the main cunal waa started in the Spring of l'JOU and the II rat unit of nine mi lea ia now com pleted. About 13,000 acres of land will be irrigated from tin- first unit, the laterals for which are being coiiNlructed under the supervision of the engineers having charge of the Project. Ity far the largest propoition of thu laud under the first unit is now b aagebrush and must be cleared and broken in time for enijis in the Spring of 1008- Work on the sec ond unit is being done by the Government and cm brace nineteen milch- of main canal and twenty-six iiiileH of laterals to furnish water to about 20,000 additional ncrea of land. Work on this unit will be lii'iiii-ciiU'tl us rapidly nn possible. Nearly one-half of the area to be irrigated ia now iimler wiler lo a depth of from one to fifteen feet ninl will be reclaimed by a system of drainage to lower thu level of the rivers and lakes. A large part of the swamp land mid practically all of the valley Imiil in the Klamath Ilasin arc held in private own ership and some in very large tracts which must be Hold in tracts of 1C0 acres or less under the regula tions governing the perfection of a water-right. KLAMATH'S For its development and prot- QltEATEST pcrity tbo Klamath Basin must have NEED people, and the right kind of people at that. Its great need is intelll gent, practical farmers, who understand the meaning of intensified and diversified farming; men who will buy land, not for speculative purposes, but with the idea of clearing off the sagebrush and making per manent and comfortable homes. Such men are bound to succeed. There ii room for thousands of them. Developing Sugar beets have been grown ex- Various perimciitally throughout the Klam- Industries ath Valley. The percentage of sugar is high, as will be noted from the following iinulysiH made by the United States De partment of Agriculture from beets grown near sugar in licets, per cent., 21.7; sugar in juice, per rent., 21.1 j eocflleii'itt of purity, 83.1. Kperieucr has demonstrated that excellent as paragon, onions ami celery can be grown, the tule lauds being very similar to those of the Sacramento mnl San .lo,iiiiiii Valleys of California, where such vegetables nru so successfully cultivated. Through out the world the reclaimed marshlands arc the best suited for the Highest development of dairy inter est m. There is no question that this will become a sugar beet producing section and that a number of facto ries will he built and operated with the development of the industry. All kinds of fruit adapted to the temperate zone llirive here apples, peaches, pears, cherries, prunes, plums, apricots and nectarines do well, and small fruits bear abundantly and of excellent quality. There are a great many small orchards throughout the bnsin that prove the adaptability of the region to the profitable production of fruit. I.. L. Smith, former president of the Oregon State Hoard of Horticulture, gives it as his opinion that tlio foothill lands arc specially adnptcd to apple growing. Cultivation of the potato has passed beyond the experimental stage, the sandy loom of the uplands producing them in great abundance. Klnmnth County wheat, grown without irrigation, took tlio premium nt the New Orleans Exposition. The most important forage crop is alfalfa, the soil being peculiarly adapted to its growth. Excess All landowners being required Holdings Must to sell their excess holdings, there Be Sold is a largo area of good land for sale at rcasouablo figures, prices rang ing from about $15 to $35 for unimproved, and $20 to $50 per acre tor improved land. Land adjacent to the principal towns commands hUrher prices. The purchaser pays for the water right at a cost of about $18 per acre to be paid for in ten equal annual in Btallmcnts without interest. This amounts to leas than the ordinary annual rental paid private ditch companies. Some of the irrigators of Klamath Val ley (and they are the most prosperous farmers) have already paid out to such companies for water $60 per aero and rwn no water. All of these companies have been purchased by the Government and included in tho system. No public lands will be open for settlement for several years. Climate The upland soil ia mainly a rich sandy and loam of great uniformity and composed Soil largely of disintegrated and eroded lava with an admixture of volcauio ash and diatomaceous earth, tho latter material of plant ori gin, formed in tho bottom of tho ancient sea which covered the greater part of the Great Basin, and of which Klamath Valloy is a northwesterly extension. Such soil, characteristic of many of tlio richest agri cultural seetions of tho world, including much of Italy and tho great plains of India, is oxtromuly fer tile, and of lasting productiveness. The lake and tulo lands are mado up of a volcanio soil containing much organio matter, a vegetable accumulation of ages, and is of a peatty nature. The climate is extromoly healthful and not severe. There is rarely any Winter weather, before the latter ' part of December, and but little rero weather during the entire Winter. The annual precipitation is about fifteen Inches, with little rain during the Summer months. IT WILL DO That's what people often say when they get articles In the Gtocery line.
