Tlio Klumuth Project Tliu Klamath Project la the name tlmt Iiiim been applied to tlio reclama tion of about 100.000 acrca of land toow ... under tlio overflow of tlio Klamath IliviT nnd of Lower Klamatli Imlco and Tulti Ivikn iniil llm u-fi(atIoii of about Ji-0,000 ncreH of valley laud adjacent to tlio Klamatli Uivcr, filling tlio eotirac or Lout Itiver and thu tributary portion of the great plateau lying chiefly in Klamath County, Oregon, but iiIko embracing a part of fiialtiyou and Modoc Coun tica, California a total urea of 200,000 ncrcH. N The I'loject eiiibracca tlio countructionf a very 1,'reat mileage of canala, laterula and drainage canaui and will Imvu ita principal Hourco in Upper Klamath I .ii l:c. Clear J.nlco and lloraefly arc reaervoir litca uhcto IIimmI water will bo impounded and utilized for irrigation of laud included in the upper portion of tho 1'rojcct. Work on tho main eunal waa started in the Spring or I HOG mid the llmt unit of nine mllca i now com pletiil. About JII.OOO acre of land will bo irrigated fiom the llmt unit, the laterals for which aro being cniiHtriicted uuder tho auperviiiion of the engineer bniiig charge of tho Project, liy far tho largeat proportion of the lund under the flrat unit in now in xiigcbi-UHh and intiat bo cluurcd and broken In time fur eropa in the Spring of 1!K)8 Work on the sec mill unit in being dune by tho Government and em bniccti nineteen milcH of inuiu canal and twenty-aix miles of InteralH to furnish water to about !0,000 additional nurcn of land. Work on this unit will be prosecuted n rapidly aw possible. Nearly one-half of tho area to be irrigated ia now under uater to a depth of from onp to fifteen feet and will bo reclaimed by a system of drainage to lower the level of tho rivcra and lake. A largo part of the swamp land and practically all of tho valley bind in the Klamath Ilasin are held in private own ersbip mid home in very largo tracts which mut be sold in tructH of 1C0 acrei or leaa under the regula tions governiui; the perfection of a water-right. KLAMATH'S For ita development and proa GKKATE8T pcrity tho Klamath Basin mutt have NEED people, nnd the right kind of people nt that. Its great need ia intelli gent, practical farmers, who understand tho meaning of intensified and diversified farming; men who will buy land, not for speculative purposes, but with the Idea of clearing off the sagebrush and making per. , mancnt and cemfortablo homes. Such men are bound to succeed. There ia room for thousands of them. Developing Sugar beet have been grown ex Various perimentally throughout the Klam Industries nth Valley. The percentage of sugar is liiiih, as will be noted from tlio fi. Hon inn analysis made by the United States De partment nf Agriculture from beets grown near Migar in beets, per cent., i.1.7; sugar in juice, per 1 cut., 'J I.l ; eoefllcient of purity, 83.1. experience lias demonstrated that excellent ns p.'ir.tKiis, unions and celery can be grown, tho tulo I.iihU being ery similar to those of the Sacramento ninl San .luaiUiu Valleys of California, where such M'gctahlcN are so successfully cultivated. Through nut the world the reclaimed marshlands are the best suited for the highest development nf dairy inter est n. There is no question that this will become n sugar beet producing section and that a number of facto ries will be built and operated with the development of the industry. All kinds of fruit adapted to the temperate 70110 thrive hero apples, peaches, pears, cherries, prunes, plums, apricots and nectarines do well, and small fruits bear abundantly and nf excellent quality. Thera aro a great many small orchards throughout tho basin that prove )to adoptability of the region to the profitable production of fruit. V.. Ii. Smith, former president of the Oregon State Hoard of Horticulture, gives it ns his opinion that the foothill lands are specially adapted to npplo growing. Cultivation nf the potato has passed beyond the experimental stage, the sandy loam of the uplands producing them in great abundance. Klamath County wheat, grown without irrigation, took the premium at the New Orleans Exposition. Tho most important forage crop is alfalfa, the soil being peculiarly adapted to its-growth. Excess All landowners being required Holdings Must to sell their excess holdings, there Be Bold Is n large area of good land for sale nt reasonable figures, prices rang ing from about $15 to $35 for unimproved, and $20 to $50 per acre tor Unproved land. Land adjacent to the principal towns commands hbzlier prices. JTho purchaser pays for the water right at a cost of about $18 per acre to bo paid for in ten equal annual in stallments without interest. This amounts to less than the ordinary annual rental paid private ditch companies. Somo of the irrigators of Klamath Val ley (and they nre the most prosperous farmers) Imvo already paid out to such companies for water $60 per nnro nnd wn no water. All of these companies Imvo been purchased by tho Government nnd included in (ho system. ' No ptiblie lauds will be open for settlement for several yenrs. Climate Tho upland soil is mainly a rich sandy and loam of great uniformity and composed Boll largely of disintegrated and eroded lava with an admixture of volcanio ash and diatomuccous earth, tho latter material of plant ori gin, formed in the bottom of tho ancient sea which covered. (ho greater part of the Groat Uasin, and of which Klamath Valloy is n northwesterly extension. Such soil, characteristic of ninny of tho richest agri cultural sections of tho world, including much of Italy and tho groat plains of India, is extremely for tlio, and of lasting productiveness. The lake and tulo lands are made up of a volcanio soil containing niuoh organio matter, a vegetablo accumulation of nges, and ia of a peatty nature. The climate is oxtremoly healthful and not severe. There is rarely any Winter weather before tho latter part of December, and but little ero weather during the entire Winter. Tho annual prooipltation ia about fifteen inches, with little rniu during the Summer months. . .. IT WILL DO That's what people often uy when they get articles In the Grocery line.
