For examples with the passing of the old year tha bells wars tolled in sadness, then. wnen midnight had struck, tha merry peals clanged forth their welcome to the new year. Before / £ = the invention of the newspaper the town crier focused the attention of tha people by lustily clanging a bell before he shouted the Important news it was his duty to spread throughout the city. Since bells have so often served to proclaim Victory it is not surprising to find that ths design of the modern cup presented as a token of victory in 'aport is In reality an inverted bell. I It Is equally fitting that on the !gay little Christmas seal for 1929 a U ringer should be portrayed tug- ig at a heavy bell, announcing co again to the nation that fur jther victorious advances have been made against the enemy tubercu losis. Each year the seal brings Ilts message of health at the Christ mas season to remind people thst >alckness can be prevented. Although the stamps are now w e l l known, they oi .gloated (in a modest fa n n e r only twenty - f i v e 1 years ago as | the Invention o f a Danish •postal c l e r k . Delaware, was *ths god-mother of the Christmas •eal in this country. She also was seeking for a method to raise jlsoney for a tuberculosis lnstitu- ttlon In her state and In 1907 found |tho solution to her problem In a ¡magazine article deacrlbing the [Danish seal and its successful mls- ialon. Through her efforts a fund rof $1,000 was raised and the pro je c t begun. The following year tbs rat nation-wide sale of tubercu- <sls Christmas seals was under taken, and women's clubs, religious ■ bodies and busi ness groups gave [ their support to ; this c h e e r f u l j method of raising money. In liilu Ihe then young National Tub.'r- I rulosis Assoc a I J • Crrutfs, sale of the seals ! and has directed it ever since. The I seals there lore should be called : tuberculosis Christmas seals. Thanks to the tiny seal, stats after state has been organized to ! attack tuberculosis with a scien tific program. Together, led by the national body, they have brought j Into existence much of the present- day community machinery that combats tuberculosis. Through the intensive educational work made possible by the Christmas seal, ¡health laws have been passed and Iare being enforced; tuberculosis ¡specialists and nnrses reach the jmost remote country districts; (printed matter on disease preven tion la circulated in schools, homes and factories, and there Is an ac tive public interest in tuberculosis control among civic, political, com mercial, social and religions groups. This year again the seal carries its message of health throughout the country, giving everyone a chance to be a bell ringer as In olden days—a proclaimer of the important tidings that health Is the beat Insurance for happiness and that tuberculosis may be cured If discovered in time. And as mil lions of letters and packages deco rated with Christmas seals travel from one end of the country to the other during December they will spread the message, "Ring in a of health with Christmas teals.” THEM DAYS ARE GONE FOREVER M O O COOÇ.
