Will some one of the judges pleas« condescend to explain to us poor employers ^who pay their sal arics just what strange malady has taken possession of them’ Just what influence is at work that per suades them to render such extreme verdicts ** have been handed out the past few months It began with that insane sentence by Judge Taz- well last spring of 25 years fur 3 young men who had robbed a fill ing station It was followed bv a nothcr recently by Judge Stevenson, who gave a boy of 19 a sentence of 20 years for a hold-up A judge in another part of the -late gives a man 50 years old a 20 year sentence for forging checks. Another judge here in Portland protected his rep utation among the lawyers, (he ex plains) by giving a first offender a sentence that has wrecked his fami ly's happiness, destroyed all hopes of restitution of the absconded funds to the victim, instead of a pa role which would have given the convicted man a chance to rehabili tate himself and pay back the debt The judge's reputation had to be sustained.
