A right that is handed to ye fr nawthin' has somethin' the matter with it."—Mr. Dooley. "They have rights who dare main tarn them "—James Russell LowelL FL O R E N C E M ILLS The Advocate staff regrets very much the untimely passing of Flor ence Mills, one of the greatest act resses the race has ever produced. She was not only famous in America, but abroad as well. The nobility of England, it is said, atended all of her perform ances; she. instead of being funny as some colored actress are, was winsom, vivacious .beautiful and a superbly attractive artist endowed with a wonderful personality. W hite theatre attenders as well as the col ored loved and admired her. She dem onstrated the fact that artistic ability may be found in one race as as well as another. PR EA C H ER S T U R N E D DOWN The members oft two Methodis churches have refused to accept the Hisbop’s appointm ent of a preacher D etroit church turned down Rev Tanner who was appointed to preach. The Detroit church by Bishop Ver non. The church at Knoxville Tenn. will not allow Rev. Callis to occupy the pulpit, oe was appointed by Bishop W allace. W hat is the mat- tre with these preachers, are they m orally bad and intelectually unfit? O r is it just dow nright meanness on the part of the officers of the church? If it be the latter, both should be unfrocked, and there is a number of them who are unworthy of the title as ministers. If this be the cause, the Bishops should exercise their authority, or else lose the powers that a Bishop is supposed to have over the church. If not, they should speak up and do that which is right the Congress and tbc speakers are: “Changing Africa" by Mr. J. I'. O ' Hara. historian and editor of the Catholic Sentinel; "Haiti," Mr*.
