KEEPING GRANTS PASS WHITE In last week’s issue of The South ern Oregpn Spokesman, the editor made a futile attempt to answer the editorial comment the Associate Edi tor of The Advocate made upon his previous editorial^about Grants Pass being a white man's town, which we published in full in the same issue as the comment. The editor of the Spokesman failed utterly In two whole columns to pre sent evidence sufficient to support his charges against the Race, and showed he was no good sportsman when be failed to publish our com ment and then have his say about it He chose only to pick out certain words and sentences, segregating them from other sentences, thereby causing them to lose their true mean ing and intent and raged about them in a most savage manner. We real ly do not feel that it is worth while to try to discuss a question so im portant as the one under discussion with a man so poorly informed as our contemporary, but there are a few questions he touched upon that we will attempt to show him the truth about in the next issue of The Advocate. TWO SPLENOID PEOPLE The colored citizens of Portland were blessed with the presence and kindly association of Dr. and Mrs. Elbert W. Moore of Pittsburgh. Pa. who went about amongst us “doing good." Out of their abundant store ot knowledge born of wide experience in the great social and spiritual life of the people, both in this country and abroad, they gave us much to think of and work with. Both are earnest conscientious Christians with a vision. And that is what the church needs so badly today in the pulpit, men and women with a vision. Both are well fitted tor their chosen work and while they have given many years to the work, they have a long road before them for even greater service. Dr. Moore is conservative, learned, scholarly, with a bearing of dignity that befits a king. Mrs. Moore is quiet, conservative, sweet of voice and charming of per sonality; she !s talented above the average woman, and her wide experi ence as a social worker has taught her to know people; it has given her accuracy of thought and firmness of action. She goes to meet a problem, not waiting for tt to reach her; above all, she is efficient, capable and un afraid! The Race needs women of Mrs. Moore’s character. We congrat ulate the Baptist denomination, espe cially the church in San Francisco, where Dr. Moore has been called, and the Race in general upon having the services of this pair of excellent thinkers and intrepid leaders who do not deal in abstractions, but who roll up their sleeves and work in “con crete". We have been greatly benefited and encouraged by this visit with us, and it is our earnest prayer that they will be again spared to come among us “doing good". ATTENTION! But remember, Race men and Race women, the Bible says there is a time for everything, and surely there must be a time to laugh and a time to cry, and don’t forget that all the time is not tor laughing. We are told that during the big rose festival parade the other day. a Race man, of soldierly appear ance, when all about him his com rades were marching, shoulders erect, faces forward, he was looking “this way and that,” up to the building windows along the streets with his “pearls” shining and glistening, as he viewed the "scenery” about him, evi dently forgetful of the fact that be was the one to be viewed. Here was a time of all times this man should have been his best—not a grinning soldier, but a soldier, serious in look and carriage, representing the serious side of life. There was a “funny” man in this same parade, the sum total of whose business was to be funny, but it is said that bad this "funny” man seen the soldier, be would have been green with jealousy on being out-funnied by the lad in khaki. Men, let us be men and not monkles; let us cease being forever the fun-maker for others. Stop, look, listen, think. TUfe fine has come for us as a Race to lay aside our foolish ness, our child’s play and put our hearts, our heads and our hands to gether and work as one for the great cause of freedom and for the building up ot a down-trodden and despised Race.
