At the outset it must be understood that of the 777,132 stockholders, own ing the railroads of the United States 702,433, or 00 per cent, live in the North. East and West; while only 74,899, or 10 per cent, live in the South. That section has been quite as laggard in financing transporta KWii tion as in recognition of human justice. Transportation is to the country what the arteries are to the body— It distributes the nation's production, population and food and develops its resources. But we asked: “What connection have the colored people, as a class, with this massive dustry ?“ The 136,065 Negroes employed the railroads in the United States the answer. Of this number thus employed are 2204 females, of whom 45 are flagwomen. There are also a number of maids on the finest equip ped trains, while 2058 colored women are classed as laborers, probably car cleaners for the moot part. Among the men there is naturally a greater diversity of occupation. Of the 133,- 881 males employed in this branch of industry, 95,921 are laborers; 20,201 are porters; «305 are firemen; 3502 are boiler washers and hostlers, and Burns about 3 cents of gas per HOUR 2887 are switchmen and flagmen. An Income tax law will put Oregon in the same class as North Dakota and will make outside capital gun shy when it comes to investing In her industries. If Wsshington jnslntains its poise amid the flood of eeml-sociallitlc and destructive legislation that is now proposed and rejects the income tax measure, it will share with Southern California the Influx of capital to the coast. Let it join Oregon in such a law and the Pacific Northwest auto matically will sign an industrial suicide pact. As a sample of how this Income tax talk affects Eastern capital, Incidents may be cited regarding a well-known Tacoma concern. This company had made plana to double its capacity this year, adding many more employes to its staff when Eastern Investors, who were to finance the improvement learned of the proposed Income tax law they promptly withdrew their cap ital and took it to more favored fields. Tacoma will lose a acore or more of families which it would have had if the proposed addition had been made. v Furnishing your own home with dream furniture—what fun the planning Is!
