PREACHER Rev. Tom Smith and Rev. Elijah Mosely have not only I brought dis- grace upon themselves I but have brought the stamp of suspicion and distrust upon the name of those who are really the ambassadors of the lowly Naxarene by their ridiculous conduct last week. Think of a minister brewing boose tor sale and for the enjoyment of his fellow associates and their consorts in one room while another "divine" and his white consort was In bed in another room, and while the trusting members of his flock out at Monta vllla were laboring and begging the public for funds with which to pay his salary and the indebtedness on the church. To say the least, this is certainly a hard blow to the colored ministry. Rev. Smith has lived in Portland for a number of years, and when the op portunity presented itself, he exhort ed the people to the good life and the way to heaven. He was also a day laborer and has long bore the repu tation of a liar and a grafter in the name of his church by fleecing white business men out of money to finance his church, which did not exist. On several occasions. The Advocate's at tention has been called by white friends to the Rev. Smith's methods, and in turn we have reported his case to others of the ministry who st-emed powerless to stop him. But now that he has been caught manufacturing boose for sale, fined, jailed end thor oughly disgraced, maybe it will be the end to his operations in this community The Rev Mr. Mosely, it is said, has left for parts unknown. He was prac tically new to the community and only a few days ago came to The Advocate office asking for introduc tions to those of the other race who might be willing to help him in his church work. As we bad not been acquainted with him very long, and I remembering another preacher this ' church had not long ago in the per son ot Rev. Lowe, who was a crook pure and simple and who since has served time in a New York peniten tiary, we told him that we would see what we could do for him at a later time. Now The Advocate, along with the colored population, Is proud that these men have been exposed and that we are rid of two crooked elders at one and the same time. FIFTY YEARS OR MORE It the experience ot the last fifty years and more have demonstrated anything to the Negro, it is that he must take hold of himself, emanci pate hts mind, free his spirit and get down to the job of doing more for himself in every phase of our Ameri- can life. He has done something, but not enough. Too much time Is spent in trying to show the world what we are and what we have done —and not enough in thinking and working today with the tuture in mind. We have too many mutual I ad- miration societies, and waste too much time telling ourselves how 1 great we are. While thus engaged. we are neglecting the very work most needed to be done. Negroes must be God moves in a mysterious way his wonders to perform or else how can we account for the Oklahoma flood. Colored Elks will make a contrtbu tion to the Japanese quake sufferers. There Is no use trying to sing In a choir or a quartette unlsas all the singers are In harmony There Is but little joy in the family circle unless there be harmony between the heads, You don’t have to be Witty, clever. or good looking to get along In this world, but you have to be harmonious.
