the police. Governor Plnchot'» tele­
gram. addressed to James Weldon
Johnson, secretary of the N. A. A. C.
P., reads:
"Your telegram received.

asking him for full statement of facta
and reason for action taken.
The
whole power ot thia commonwealth
will be used If necessary to maintain
constitutional rights."
According to press dispatches of
Heptember 1«. Mayor Caufflel de­
clared on being asked his opinion of
the Assoc 1st Ion's protest that be
don't care what authority I have; for
their own safely and for the safety
of the Johnstown public the Negroes
are going out of this city. . . . They
tall me I'm going lo get Into trouble.
I don't care what they say................ If
the rest of them (the Negroes) don't
get out soon. I'll arm police and send
th-m into the colonies to walk the
Negroes out of town at the point ot
a gun.'*

Gov. Plnchot. Mayor Caufflel at

September 30. the arbitrary action ot
the mayor caused his defeat in the
primaries on Heptember 19. In a field
of seven candidates he ran a poor
fifth. The New York press headed
the news account, "Mayor's Negro
Ran Costs Him His Job.”
The N. A. A. C. P. announced today
that It was determined to push the
case against the mayor to the fullest
extent. The Association has a trained
investigator In Johnstown who Is rap­
idly gathering evidence which. It Is
hoped, will form a basis for impeach
tnenl proceedings

cial note of Inquiry was sent by the
Mexican embassy to the Secretary of
State of the United States on Sep
tember It, requesting full reports on
the alleged deportation of Mexican
cltixens from the Pennsylvania steel
town. The embassy further announc­
ed It had instructed the Mexican con­
sulate at Philadelphia to proceed to
Johnstown and report. The embassy
contended the mayor bad no legal
authority to expell peaceful Mexican
residents.
MURDERER GETS TEN YEARS
Albert Corley, colored, who shot to
death Frank Berry In an argument at
15th and Lovejoy streets. July 10th
and who wee found guilty of man
slaughter by a Jury sitting In Circuit
Judge Tucker's court Wednesday,
the l*th. was sentenced to 10 years
in the penitentiary and a fine of
33000 by Judge Tucker Tuesday.

Portland. Ore., is corresponding sec

tive secretary and arneral missionary
of the Mountain Interstates Conven­
tion.
Rev. Anderson came to Portland
Just four years ago. accepted the call
to the pastorate of the Mt. Olivet
Baptist Church, with about a doxen
working members. Two years after­
ward. the church voted to build a
new church, having only $21600 in
the bank for building purposes. The
church appointed a building commit­
tee, making Pastor Anderson chair­
man of said committee. On the first
Sunday in October, 1921. the corner
stone was laid.

the Oregon Baptist Convention, de­
livered the principal address at the
ground-breaking on the 8th day ot
this year (1923). The church was
dedicated between that time and the
corner stone laying. Later, the church
became divided, and everything that
could be done was done to make the
leadership of Dr. Anderson a failure;
at one time one of the members tried
to take his life, but that did n't stop
him. it was said that he would nev­
er finish the church, but he did; he
has done more than any minister of
our race that ever came to Portland.
He surely Is a hustler, an excellent
preacher and a successful pastor. He
has a fine wife, a nice home, lives in
one o! the fashionable districts of
our city; drives a fine automobile,
and it Is said bis church
