Declined the Job.
A writer of cheap fiction relates 3
trick phiyed on him by a collaborator
in the days When dime novels were
longer thHti they ore now, and the
coins-iisatloii made It worth while for
two men to write one story between
them. After his partner hud bnixhed
the first chapter of their Initial col
laboration It was hnud.s) over with
the followlog announcement:
"There. I've Just thrown the hero
over a thousand foot cliff and told the
reader that not hi 11 e could tirevent the
He took ! Ind from falling 10 death on the rocks
below. It Is up to you to save tb
boy."
The otber writer said nothing, but
sat down and wrote furiously fur an
hour. Then be quietly banded tbe
manuscript back. A glance at the
second chapter showed the funny man
that his friend bud completely IgDored
tbe events In the first part of tbe
story. Introduced a new set of char
acters and left tbe bero stilt banging
over the cliff, waiting to be rescoed
till one week after the funeral, when by bis creator. New York 8au,
0 auction should take place of every
thing It contained. No one was to be
admitted to the sale except his rela
tives. Since he left no direct heirs, most of
the relntlves were present at the read
ing of the will, each hoping for a sub
stantial remembrance. When they
heard this singular provision and
learned that the testator had left no
legacy to any one of them they natu
rally Inferred that he had concluded to
remember them by leaving their lega
cies In different articles of furniture.
Hut what a singular way! Ten thou
sand dollars might l? In a hollow cane,
while but $l.(XO had been placed lu a
rosewood desk. Vet the cune might be
knocked down for a dollar, while the
desk might bring $100. Wns there ever
such a way devised for distributing
millions of money? The will further
stated that the amount realized from
tbe sale wus to be expended by the
executor for a monument to the de
ceased. When the day of the sale came
around Ii was astonishing how many
relatives Hunter had left behind him.
There were Hunters Innumerable both
by name and in reality. A protest
was made to tbe executor that many
of them were not related to the testa
tor and should not be admitted. But
be argued that by tbe terms of the
will the sale must take place then and
there and there was no time to exam
ine credentials. i
The crowd were kept waiting while
articles were first sold that could not
possibly contain anything, such as un
covered crockery. On these there
were only such bids as would servo
to get them out of the way. But
when It came to articles in which
stacks of bills could be placed the bid
ding became furious. As soon as an
article was knocked down the buyer
wished to pet at It. but wns Informed
that he could not have It till after the
sale. The bidders hail every variety
of opinion lis to what articles were
most likely to contain large amounts,
so that nny thing wooden or hollow
brought excellent prices. A kitchen
table with a drawer (locked and no
keyi brought $100. an upholstered sofa
fjoo. 11 nine tishlug rod $70. A stew
pan w ith 11 hollow handle large enough
to contain a dozen $1,000 bonds
brought $117 One of the favorites
wns a plaster bust of Abraham Lin
coln. Such busts are usually hollow,
nnd this would naturally attract an
Ingenious hide. It brought $u55 and
was the cnuse of a protracted quarrel
between two different branches of
Hunters.
Well, the last article was finally
knocked down, and buyers were told
that they might take away their pur
chases. A rush was made for the
articles, but few were removed- Sev
eral purchasers had brought hammers
and with these began to smash their
articles. The signal was a crack on
the bead of Abraham Lincoln's bust,
which dropped Into a couple of dozen
pieces. An exclamation of rage went
np from the man who had paid the
enormous price for It From that mo
ment tbe crash of furniture, the rip
ping of upholstery and the smashing of
glass and stoneware were mingled
with oaths and exclamations of disap
pointment Not a single article knock
ed down by the auctioneer contained
ono cent or one cent's worth of prop
erty. 'the next morning the newspapers

College Sentiment.
