If plants are to ..tow rapidly and produce larcre yields, they must he well fed. About half the dry weicht of a mature plant Is made up i carbon. Practically all of this comes ii-oin the carbon dioxide of the nlr. Every acre r,f uhont will iiso n tnn of this ens or -ii . i . i - i- ,i,, ii I rlwn f.vor Hip Here. The constant mix- ail Utll in in u la i e. ui mi in., t mil. lng of the air by the wind is alwaya j bringing fresh supplies within rea ': of j the plant. j The farmer does not need to concern himself with the supply of carbon dl- j oxide, for every time he builds a fire I or even breathes he Is adding to the store of this material In the air. The smooth upper surface of a leaf is both air and water tight. On the underside, however, are many small onenins whic h are reallv the mouths of the plant. It is through these tiny holes that eartion dioxide is ' ken Into the leaf to be used by the chlorophyll. In making starch and other products out of carbon dioxide and water some oxygen Is given off. This, passes out through the openings In the leaves. Thus you see that plants breathe In much the same way as animals do, only they give off oxygen, the product which Is used by animals, and take up carlKin dioxide, the which Is breathed out by animals. In this way plants mnke animal life possible. Ani mals gira off carbon dioxide and manure as waste products. Plants tear these waste products to pieces and by rebulldlns them make them once more Into food for the animals. Next to carbon hydrogen and oxy gen are the foods that the plant uses In largest rjuantltiea. Since water Is composed of these elements, the sup ply will be plentiful as long as there Is plenty of water In the soil. There Is one elemeut, nitrogen, which forms a eonsWerable part of the plant, that Is harder to get. While threo-fonrths of the air Is nlfrogen. the plant does not seem to be able to use It In this form. The only kind of plinfs that can use the nitrogen In the sir at all are the legumes, such as clover and alfalfa. Certain bacteria that live on the roots of those legumes have the power of changing the at mospheric iiltroperi into forms In which the plant can use It. We shall study more about this process later. Nitrogen Is one of the most Impor tant plant foods, and It Is one that Is very often lacking. If the plant can not pet a sufficient supply of nitrogen it will L stunted, will stop growing early, and the yield will be very much reduced. Since all the crops, with the exception of the legumes, must get their nitrogen from the soil, the farm er must eee to It that there Is a plen tiful supply there If be wishes to ob tain a large yield. If you will drop a little rich black soil on a hot shovel some of It will g-o up In smoke. The part that burns U humus and Is rncde up of vegetable and animal matter which Is partly Cm caved. This humus contains large amounts of nitrogen, and from this Source the greater share of this ele ment used by the plant must come. If your noil Is black, spongy and well supplied with humus there Is little danger that the plant will go hungry for T'ltrot'en. One of the best ways to keep a field In this condition Is to ap ply liberal otiantltles of baruywrd ma unrc. o'ther way Is to plow under green rr. i s, especially clover. florn tluuh I' I.j iieceasary to buy nitrogen for ' rinit n the form of ccirricr clnl fertlU'em. but this Is n very ex oeuslvi' way of obtaining It. i.ten when the plant In given all tb isps- .. ti rnp OB0 , sometimes fsfia In to ! mi".: I.I i, li iv of n.iiiiril as it in Too tl!.' if tlio !
