Snow Sport. A delightful game to piny In the win ter holiday, when the long hours drag within doom, U anow fox and geeae, says the Washington Btnr. A very slight snowfall will suffice for the game, but It may be played with snow a foot deep In a city back yard or In the field of the ennntry. The game Is prepared by the boy. who first, with high IxHita, trnmplo In the snow a huge circle, with all or eight diametric paths as the alge of the lot may allow. After these paths art clearly marked the fun begins. Any number may join In the sport. It Is like the old story of "The Spider snd the Fly." One person stands In the center of the cltrle and dnthee up and dowu the diametric paths to seise upon the others ss they fly around the circle. The players can venture Into the cen ter If they are so daring, but If caught they become the spider snd dash for another victim. The one who Is catch ing cannot walk around the circum ference, but Is confined to the central paths. Insect end Ntt. It hns been known for a long time that sn Insect will not fly through a net with meshes three or four times ss large as Its body, wherras a bird will go through a mesh of correspond ing size without hesitation. The In sect cannot tell ut why It stops and lights on the net without trying to go through, and Its peculiar action pus sled observers until the scientists took the matter up. aa they do all things of that klud. They any that the eye of the Insect la made up of many facets, so that the net looks to It like a con tinuous opaque surface, the meshes not being apparent. Therefore It stops or turns bock before It discovers that It might have gone through the net with out stopping. To the eye of the bird, however, the meshes are plainly vis ible, and It goes through without hesi tation. Riddles and Answers. One of the players takes a stick In his left band and thumps the floor with It, saying, "lie can do little who can't do this." Then be hands the stick to another player, who will probably uso bis right band when holding the stick snd thumping the ground. If be does he is told he hus failed In the simple task, aud the atlck Is passed to anoth er. The same goes on until some one discovers thnt the secret of the trick Is to copy the leader exactly, and there fore the stick must be held In the left hand. Puxzlet Answered. Aaierlcun. A FAMILY OF MICE. Whi it Happened to tht Stupid Ontt When They Wtnt to Play. There were five little field mice. Their mother was very wise, and one day when they went out to play she told them that when she chirped like a bird they must lie perfectly still. Thst seemed so funny that the mice were ! on,, lao k each other " f01. ,,,a"f would have been much better to ask their mamma, but they were very little. Just then their mother saw a hawk In the sky and chirped. One poor little mouse got frightened and forgot all about what she said, and one dived down Into a hole. Unfortunately there was a weasel In that hole, and t he weasel got him. Another ran off and got lost In the grass and never was found again. Another ran and tried to bide tinder J leaf, and a hawk swooped down and ate hliu up. An other Jumped Into tho bushes and a snake swallowed b I in. Tho fifth etay ed quite still, and, though he did not know It, he looked so like a withered leaf that neither suuko uor the weasel nor the huwk saw hlin at all.
