That Oregon now has upou Its stat ate roll law for the punishment of children the "most severe in the United States" is not a fact of which we can feel proud. iu.ntM.i8m in the public schools Is an evil, but the people have never a - A 1 ...... It accuetom-d themselves to me iiu".". of imprisoning children for that cause, and if today, an attempt should l made in Lakeview to put a child iu prison for truancy, it would FAIL. How can it be possible that the child ren of parents who are freely taxing themselves, in the counties, beyond the requirements of the law, and are voting additional district taxes for better bouses, more mo.ieru equip ments, and tor Ioniser terms of school, can be absenting themselves from the schools to such an extent as to surest the propriety of so harsh a penalty? The universal sentiment expressed here is, that the best citizens, aod most earnest supporters of popular education will withdraw from partici pation in the administration of the public schools, rather thau be in the remotest degree responsible for the imprisonment of a child for irregular attenadnce. Public schools have not been forced upon the people against their wishes. They have themselves paid the cost of general provisions for public educa tion, and have freely taxed themselves locally to supplement the general school fund, and they resent the iro, pntation which this statute makes against them. Every fact accumula ted in fourjhundred years' experiment in milder meaus of government of children declares against the wisdom of this law. The people will never en force it here, or see it enforced. Tampered With Witnesses. The prosecution in the Hermann trial charges Mr. Gately, Hermann's attorney and son-in-law, with tamper ing with the government witnesses. When Sorenson, one cf the convicted Oregon land thieevs, arrived at Wash ington to testify against Herjuaun, Gately met him and had a loniWon versation in Soreuson's room, giving the witness his bouse uimber and tel ephone number. Evidence is being brought out showing that the LSlue Mountain forest reserve was created, or a large portion of it, for the benefit of parties who were intending to rob the government of valuable timber lands. Sorenson testified that be used a letter from Hermann to F. P. Mays of Portlandfor the purpose of inducing people to buy laud in the country that was tc be included in the reserve, as stated in the letter. Mays is alleged to have told Soreusou, "We will all get a tip from Washing ton as soon as the Blue Mountain re serve is created. " Sorenson also testi fied that he had promised Mitchell $000 if be would have the Cascade reserve extensiou made, and Mitchell wrote that be would confer with Her mann then comimssiouer of the gener al land office, and later advised Soren son how to proceed. Sorenson said he paid this 8500 debt by working for Mitchell's election to the U. S. sen ate. Timber land is not the only kind of land that is being sought after by the land grabbers. According to a state ment from Harney county, vast areas are being boged up under the e'esert land law, and thousands of acres aie falling into the ban is of the people who do not comply with the law. The i report states that in many cases set tlers locate on a desert and a , home stead claim at the same time, the land adjoining, swearing that one is agri cultural and the other desert upon which crops cannot be grown without water. Instances Eie sighted where desert claims have been taken up bor dering a stream, where little effort was required to turn the water onto the land. The Nevada legislature has passed a joint resolution asking for the annex ation to Nevada that portion of Cal ifornia lying east of the summit of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, comprising Modoc, Lasso n, Alpine, Mono and Inyo counties. Floods have been raging in nearly all the eastern states, and serious damage has resulted. The little fresh ets we have here are damp spells com pared with the eastern floods. It is still "Thaw (ing)" in New York. The "brain storm" has not subsided. OASTOni Bmh th 1 Kind You Han Always BoW Indian Arrow H-ad-. That Indian arrow beads, found in large numbers all over the western plaius, are not the points made foi the arrows of the American Indians and that the mounds, commonly ac cepted as the worn of the ied men, were made by another race, which liv p lpfore the Aniericat-t Indians, is the declaration of Pr. Chas. Kaetmau, the educated Sioux Indian, who is now re-naming the mpmbprs of the Sioux nation. Ir. Eastman is one of the most distinguished of Indian students. He scoffs the idea that the American Indians originated the flint pointed arrow or the granate and flint battle clubs and the tomahawks, and believe most of the arrow heads found throughout the west were made by the race which roamed the hunting grouuds before the Indians came to take posession of them. He has lived all his life, and Is now a man of 40 years,as a wild Iudiau ou the reserva tion of the Dakota, and he says he uever has known an Indian who could make au arrow head, or ever knew of oue being made, or who know any thing of the origin of the flint points. Field and Farm. Fofesters at Paisiey. The meeting at Paisley passed off smoothly, ami all applicants for range were satisfied. The part of the reserve handled from Paisley was from the township line let ween .W and 31, and about 13 applicants for range were preseut. The meeting vas managed the same as was the oue held at Lake view the week before. Guy lugraiu, of the Forest service, returned from Paisley, where he, in compauy with Inspector Erickson, went to bold a stockmens' meeting on the loth. Mr. Erickson will pro ceed to Silver Lake, w here be will hold a meetiug of tho stockmen of that section, after which he will go on up into the northern reseresto make a tour of inspection. Mr. Erickson w ill be absent lrom Lakeview until about the first of April, during which time the Lakeview office will be iu the hands of Mr. lucrain and Mr . K. F. Hammutt. Mrs. Norin Entertains. Last Saturday afternoon, Mrs. J. E. Norin gave another of her always eu- joyable parties. Twenty guests were iu attendance, and not a dull moment was speut from the time of arrival, two P.M.. until 5 :.T0, when goodby'sj were said with a feeling of regret, that all things have au end, even the most enjoyable of 'afternoons, and ; this one seemed all to short. i The early hours were given to w hist. ! At 4:30 a temptiug luucheou was, spread and partaken of w ith a relish, that satisfied the hostess of its perfec tion. After luncteou, vocal solos by Mrs. Roy Shirk, and Mrs. Norin, in strumental selections by Miss Laura Snelling, and a charming recitation j by little Miss Gertrude Hamer, were! liteued to with great pleasure. Mrs. Noriu's home is perfect fori entertaining, and Mrs. Norin is au j exceptionally pleasent hostess. County Court Proceedings. Lakeview, Ore. March 0, 1907. Be it remembered that ou this, the !
