LAKE COUNTY F XA ilNUK, La K 13 V I liW , OKCUON, DEC. 3, I W.I. The Jackrabbit Problem. An pntoprUlntr Orison Ann linn dlnroYrrvtl n rational way of tlta zoning of the JjH-kraMtlt, rMtlliiK the country of what han Ihi'H hitherto t rejrHnletl n an ntrrU-ulturnl jnHt ntul j nilriinK an important Item t the stock of eatablen, n luxury highly prlited ty epleureii, tays thet'hronlele. i The plan In to convert the Jackrabbit j Into cannel hare. .Vint for thin pur-j pone a canning factory han Ihvd i ervetetl ami thoroughly eijulpin-d at ; Portlaml. j The Jackrabbit Ih the rncllic (nint i prototyie of the Knglish hare, cor-j responding elonely to the latter in j nizo, form, habits ami color ami tate j ofthefletih. When an Kngllwh linrvj Is projMrly cooked and nerved It con stitutes one of the daintiest dlnhes prodiRtnl in the T.rltlsh Ules. The llritlxh game law protects it, partly for the winter sport which It affords the gentry who are devoted to the chase, but chiefly lecnnse it is one of the rarest of the wild animals suit able for human food to le found In the United Kingdom. IftheOregou venture proves suc cessful, and there Is no good reason why It should not, the jackrabbit problem, which has jerplexed Cal ifornia even more than any other Tactile State, will lie in a fair way of Wing solved. For many years these aultuals have been the most destructive foes against which the viuevardista and wheat-growers of the interior valleys have been forced to contend. When a price was plac ed on the scalp of the coyote in de fense of the poultry yard and the sheepfolds the jackrabbits natural enemy was nearly exterminated and they multiplied rapidly into a more serious pest than the one the bounty destroyed. To reduce their num bers annual drives have been adopt ed, and although thousands are killed in each of these drives no ap parent impression has been made on the droves. Little except the pelts have survived these drives. The great majority of the carcasses have rotted on the scene of slaughter. There ha thus been a tremendous waste of a really good food product which could have been profitably utilized if the Oregon plan of canning had been in operation. The Oregon ians have taken their cue from the Australians, who have made money out of the English wild rabbit or Belgian hare pest with which they were afflicted and which threatened, before rabbit-canning was Introduc ed, to destroy, every agricultural pursuit in the commonwealth. The pest Is now under control and a valuable industry has been established. The same results will lie obtained In this State with respect to the jackrabbit If the Ore gon and Australian example is fol lowed. There is doubtless profit in a Jackrabbit cannery in more ways than one; besides, a good game animal which Is now a nuisance may be converted through it to a useful purpose. $100 REWARD, I00.
