'They have permitted the worst element of the popu latimi to represent them in the administration of justice. The con- seiilence is that u lynching which would disgrace a (K'nple representing the lowest grade of civil. iti, in is iutensitied in its re volting fcaHiircs hy the action of the ssse who, according to resr(s, arrested the live men who were siiHxvted of hav ing stolen bits of harness, wire fenseand other trifles. The evidence coming from differeut Hoiirces leaves little doubt that the posse were either afraid of the lyncherd or were aiding them in their murderous purHse' The (iiand Jury can tie something to relieve the county from the disgrace thai hat) been east upon it, and are expucted to sift the fragments of the evidence to the bottom. The friends of the lynch ers seem inclined to terrorise citizens w ho a e disposed to bring the murderers to account. There seems, therefore, a call for an uprising of the better element in the population of the county. The (iraud Jury should be made to realize that if they do their duty they will not be left to bear the brunt of the storm the indictment of the alleged lynchers will provoke. It will be a bud day for Modoc county when the prepetrators of mich an atro cious crime as has been committed es cape punishment. The details of the bantling show the guilty parties, who ever they are, to be devoid of human feelingM. They belong to the type of men who take 11 ficiidit-li delight in the safe shedding of blood. Something' may be allowed in the case of frontier-men who meet in an informal manner ! punish the Kirpetratois of a great (line, but these Modou lynchers were actuuted by no adequate motive. A little petty thiev ing seemed to them to afford a pretext for the gratification of their brutal instincts. i' l" ..lie there. 11 nli-u-ing :.-.i: u -e nl his i-iii'-rliiitiiiii-iit i" to i'iij.M;.-i- in -i.im-ni l!..- i.--t Mi-.il in ii - n; i-v-r l.'-.ini 1.1 a I :i k--v ii-.1 ijtir.lt by w:n 'l van i' i.iii. Cirainistaiu ts may make in ill only touch lightly upon what we term his fiailties, occasioned probably I by hit over-zcti'oiisne s. I On Sunday evening last l.ev. Miller juiured the moiilten lava of bell up m the heads of the desecraiers of the Sab bath. In his text, of which "Salvation" was the meter, none were spared. The baseball player, the gambler, the freight er w ho worked ou Sunday, the sheepman with his flock, the storekeeper who waits for nickels on Sunday, the raloon kecper at all times, and the new spaier man who publishes saloon advertise mentseven the man who carries a bundle beneath his arm on Sunday all came in for a share of his fearful deuun ciation, and, we might say, vitupera tion. This is all right and pardonable from such a en.tr.-e. Nothing else is ex ected of an enthusiastic or sensational preacher, but in the course of his harsh criticism of the sinners the good man did not halt to consider for a moment that the very temple of God he preaches in was builded by the money of the mer chants, saloonkeepers, baseball player?, sheepmen, newspaper men and the men who carry bundles lK-nea-4i their arms on the Sabbath Day as well s the ''christians." The money of the saloon keepers, merchants, wives of merchants, baseball players and newspaper men that fell into the anxiously exjectant coffers of the preacher last Sunday night and other nights throughout the week was not counterfeit and was accepted by the good Kvangelist Miller without pro test, but with an eagerness, notwith standing it vas money made from black of man a sinner. Doubtless Kev. Miller is doing much good for the cause, of Christianity in I.akeview , and we sin cerely hope he is. There is much room for impioveinent here and we rejoiie that the Evangelist is rattling the dry bones and calling sinners to account. Kvery man to his calling. We can't all be preachers of the Gospel. The Examiner wishes Evangelist Mil ler success both in a monetary sense and in his work for the salvation of souls. We ho)) all our townspeople will go to the church luring his stay here and listen to his discourses, and to most en joyable music. And take your n'ckels and dimes and quarters and halves with you it matters not w hether you make it on Sunday or Monday it is all good money to Evan gelist Miller. Seven Times Week. Some time ago, in. mediately after the Nevada, California & Oregon railroad company put on a Sunday service, the patrons of the I.akeview postottice peti tiouel the authorities at Washington to give Lakeview a seven-times a week mail service on the Southern line. The petition was granted and last Sunday, June liith, the new schedule went into effect and the Southern stages departed and arrived on the regular week day time, carrying the mails to and from Lakeview. This system will be of much convenience to the piople of Lakeview as well as to the public north and south. "An Unkind Cut."
